Mercedes unveiled the first performance-focused version of the E-Class W214 that’s been developed by AMG. The E53 Hybrid 4Matic+ is available in sedan and estate bodystyles with more aggressive looks, a sharper chassis setup, and up to 603 hp (450 kW / 612 PS) of power, optionally available from a plug-in hybrid powertrain.

Even though it is still positioned below the upcoming E63 performance flagship (which will also inherit a PHEV setup), the E53 represents a big step up compared to its predecessor in terms of power and performance.

The plug-in hybrid system comprises a 3.0-litre six-cylinder engine with 443 hp (330 kW / 449 PS), and a single electric motor with 161 hp (120 kW / 163 PS) which is integrated within the AMG Speedshift TCT 9G transmission. The combined output is 577 hp (430 kW / 585 PS) and 750 Nm (553 lb-ft) of torque, transmitted to all four wheels via the fully variable 4Matic+ system. However, the optional AMG Dynamic Plus Package unlocks a more impressive 603 hp (450 kW / 612 PS) when the Race Start mode of the launch control is enabled.

As a result, the sedan accelerates from 0-100 km/h (0-62 mph) in as little as 3.8 seconds (3.9 for the estate) which is 0.7 seconds faster than the old mild-hybrid six-pot E53 and 0.6 seconds slower than the V8-powered E63 S. With the optional AMG Driver’s Package, top speed is electronically limited to 280 km/h (174 mph) for the sedan and 275 km/h (171 mph) for the estate.

The PHEV nature of the E53 means that it can be driven solely on electric power, although this limits the top speed to 140 km/h (87 mph). The battery pack has a usable capacity of 21.22 kWh, offering a zero-emission range between 90-101 km (56-63 miles) in the WLTP cycle. With the optional 60 kW DC fast charger, the battery can charge from 10 to 80 percent in around 20 minutes.

Predictably, the E53 Hybrid 4Matic+ comes equipped with all the AMG-related goodies, including a stiffened chassis, a sporty suspension setup with adaptive and adjustable damping, a high-performance braking system with larger brakes, and standard rear-axle steering. Furthermore, the AMG Dynamic Plus package adds an electronically controlled rear axle locking differential, even larger composite brakes at the front, dynamic engine mounts, and the Race Start function.

Visually, the E53 Hybrid 4Matic+ is distinguished from the lesser E-Class versions thanks to the illuminated AMG-specific grille, and the larger air intakes on the front bumper. The profile features wider front fenders adding 11 mm (0.4 inches) on each side, side gills, and a new set of 19-inch alloy wheels that can be optionally upgraded to 20-inch alloys or 21-inch forged wheels. Finally, the rear end features quad tailpipes, and a lip spoiler, setting it apart from the less powerful AMG Line trims. In typical Mercedes style, the optional AMG Exterior Night Package (I and II) and AMG Carbon Exterior Package are offered for those who want to spend money on black chrome or carbon fiber makeup.

Inside, the electrically adjustable AMG sports seats (optionally available AMG performance seats) are upholstered in Artico man-made leather and microcut microfiber with red contrasting stitching. The AMG performance steering wheel is covered in Nappa leather, while the illuminated grey open-pore ash wood trim on the dashboard and door cards is a hybrid-specific feature. The infotainment has a few AMG-specific and hybrid-specific displays, with the pictured MBUX Supercreen layout being part of the optional equipment.

The Mercedes-AMG E53 Hybrid 4Matic+ will soon be available to order in Europe, alongside the full-spec “Edition 1” trim. North American buyers will only get their hands on the sedan bodystyle, set to reach US dealers later this year.
