The W463 G-Class is about to receive a mid-lifecycle update, with the G500 and AMG-branded G63 trims appearing in official teasers. The facelift will improve the aerodynamics without altering the SUV’s boxy silhouette and rugged stance, while the interior will benefit from a modern infotainment touchscreen. Furthermore, Mercedes will introduce mild hybrid options to the lineup alongside a fully electric version.
Starting with the powertrains, the facelifted G500 (G550 in the US) will reportedly drop the V8 in favor of a cleaner mildly electrified inline-six engine. On the contrary, the G63 will keep the AMG-tuned twin-turbo 4.0-liter engine, albeit with the addition of a 48V mild-hybrid system.
The difference between the two is evident in the preliminary emission data published by Mercedes – 281‒248 g/km CO₂ for the G500 and 358-335 g/km CO₂ for the G63. The facelifted Mercedes-AMG G63 will also benefit from another important technical upgrade, the new Active Ride Control suspension, which is said to improve its off-road credentials.
Mercedes has previously shown the the zero-emission model with quad electric motors allowing it to perform tank turns. Motortrend reports that the EV will adopt the G580 moniker, instead of the previously rumored EQG as Mercedes decided to drop the EQ naming scheme altogether. Finally, the revised powertrain lineup will include mild-hybrid diesel (G350d) and diesel (G450d) options.

In terms of styling, the official G500 / G550 teasers reveal a redesigned grille featuring horizontal slits and a new set of alloy wheels. We expect slightly tweaked bumpers and rounded pillars to be applied across the lineup, with the AMG-branded model being distinguished by an even more aggressive bodykit.
Despite looking similar to its predecessor, the rather discreet changes will improve the brick-like aerodynamics of the G-Wagen. Less drag helps Mercedes engineers increase the driving range of the BEV and reduce fuel consumption in the ICE-powered models.
Inside, all versions of the facelifted G-Class will come equipped with the latest MBUX infotainment. The second generation of the SUV that debuted in 2019 already featured a digital cockpit but this will be the first time it will receive a proper touchscreen. Mercedes designers might also add new options for the trim and the upholstery, with increased personalization potential from the Manufaktur department.
We will learn more about the facelifted Mercedes G-Class soon, as the official debut appears to be imminent.
