In designing the new R3 and its tougher-looking twin, the R3X, Rivian could have easily fallen into the trap of creating something that looks futuristic and screams, ‘Look at me, I’m an EV!’ Instead, as Rivian’s own chief designer recently explained, the team has drawn inspiration from some of the most iconic European hot hatches and coupes from the 1980s. The result is a shape that is already receiving universal praise.
With that in mind, the artistic mind behind Abimelec Design has rendered how the new high-riding R3X model might appear with some subtle styling changes and liveries inspired by the Lancia Delta Integrale, Renault R5 Turbo, and VW Golf GTI from that era.
The Lancia-inspired model is perhaps the most eye-catching. Rendered in a vibrant shade of red, it features a pinstripe running just below the side windows adorned with the Martini colors. Additionally, the EV sports white wheels and boasts a modified front bumper with updated turn signals.

Staying true to its source of inspiration, the Renault 5 Turbo-inspired variant boasts a vibrant blue hue, accentuated by the signature blue and silver rally-style wheels. Adding to its rally-inspired look, the model features small yellow fog lights positioned at the front, completing its homage to the iconic French hatch.
On the other hand, the Golf GTI-inspired rendition sports a sleek silver and black exterior finish, enhanced by striking red accents along with a set of classic Pirelli P-slot alloy rims that pay tribute to the timeless design elements of the legendary Golf GTI.
Given the widespread appeal of the R3’s design, it wouldn’t be surprising to see owners opting to customize their vehicles with liveries inspired by classic hot hatches like the ones depicted here. Yet, enthusiasts will need to remain patient, as production of the R3 and R3X is slated to follow the launch of the R2 in 2026, barring any unanticipated setbacks in Rivian’s manufacturing schedule.
