BMW is preparing to mark a significant milestone with their Neue Klasse (pronounced Noyer Classer) generation of offerings, with a 3-Series-sized electric sedan and the second-generation iX3 electric SUV set to lead the charge. For the time being, we’re referring to it as the iX3, although the Bavarian automaker has yet to confirm the production car’s name.

Previewed by the automaker’s recent Vision Neue Klasse X concept, the iX3 will embody a cutting-edge approach to efficiency, propulsion and an all-new design direction. It will be offered alongside gasoline, diesel, and plug-in hybrid variants of the fifth-generation X3, slated for introduction this August, in line with the approach taken with today’s iX3.

Neue Klasse, New Look
The new iX3, codenamed NA5, heralds a fresh chapter in BMW’s aesthetic philosophy, with a significant emphasis on reductive design (no more massive Kidneys!) principles. Notable frontal features include a sleek panel on the nose, integrated double LED headlights reminiscent of the Vision Circular and Vision Neue Klasse concepts, a dual-cowl hood, and angular lower vent elements.
Intriguingly, the side profile echoes that of the iX electric SUV, with flat-faced wheel arches, fuss-free surfacing, and a reimagined Hofmeister kink. The dynamic rear sports wide-spanning OLED taillights with a layered construction that exudes an illusion of depth.
A Futuristic Outlook
Inside, the iX3 will offer a glimpse into all of BMW’s future interiors. A wrap-around dashboard will echo the design of the Vision Neue Klasse, setting the stage for the next-generation user experience that promises a seamless integration of the digital and physical realms.
The BMW Panoramic Vision, a first for the brand, will project essential information across the width of the windscreen, allowing both driver and passengers to interact with the vehicle through simple gestures. It will be complemented by a 3D Head-Up display and powered by a highly integrated software architecture that combines various data streams for a tailored, situation-specific interaction between the iX3 and its occupants.
Efficient Propulsion
The transition from CLAR underpinnings to the Neue Klasse platform heralds the sixth generation of BMW eDrive technology. Moreover, this platform is highly flexible, accommodating both single- and dual-motor setups for rear or all-wheel drive configurations. Entry-level single-motor models might bear the iX3 40 designation, while at the upper end of the spectrum, BMW could introduce M60 xDrive and potentially even iX3 M performance variants, boasting power outputs of up to 600hp.
The utilization of round battery cells elevates energy density by over 20% compared to previous models, complemented by a 30% enhancement in charging speed and range. These advancements, along with an 800-volt system, optimized weight, and thermal management, ensure a competitive driving range exceeding 500 miles or over 800 kilometers.

It will also feature bidirectional charging with “Vehicle to Home”, “Vehicle to Grid”, and “Vehicle to Load” functionality, as recently confirmed by BMW.
“With the Neue Klasse, we are introducing bidirectional charging, which we have already tested extensively,” stated BMW CEO Oliver Zipse. “Our customers can feed electrical energy stored in the vehicle back into their own house, electrical devices like your e-bike or the public power grid. This lowers electricity costs and helps stabilize networks.”
Another interesting new feature expected to be offered in production Neue Klasse models, like the SUV, is a customizable soundtrack. Drivers will be able to select from four pre-programmed options: Calm, Free, Expressive, and Agile. BMW says these soundscapes aim to enhance the electric driving experience and cater to individual preferences.
Rivals and Reveal
Key rivals in the increasingly competitive and crowded luxury compact SUV segment include the Audi Q4 e-tron, Porsche’s new Macan EV, Mercedes-Benz EQC, Tesla Model Y, Jaguar I-PACE, Lexus RZ and the upcoming Rivian R2, among others.
Production will commence at BMW’s new i Factory in Debrecen, Hungary, in early 2025, followed by a worldwide sales release. It should be offered as a 2026 model year in North America, with the rest of the world receiving it as a 2025 model. Additionally, BMW has plans to introduce a long-wheelbase version of the iX3, codenamed NA6, specifically tailored for the Chinese market.
