- The new X3 is based on the same CLAR platform as the outgoing model.
- BMW is yet to announce full powertrain specifications for the updated SUV.
- Owners will be able to park the X3 with their smartphones.
Development of the new BMW X3 is drawing to a close and the carmaker has shown a prototype being put through its paces ahead of the SUV’s launch in a few weeks.
Like the outgoing X3, the new model is underpinned by BMW’s CLAR chassis but will immediately stand out with a thoroughly revised design. Having tested the new SUV extensively in hot and cold conditions, BMW engineers recently headed to the BMW Group test center in Miramas, France, to fine-tune the chassis control and driver assistance systems.

BMW says the new X3 has a wider track than its predecessor and produces less lift at the rear axle. The body and chassis are also more rigid than before and BMW has increased the caster of the front wheels by 19%. It has also modified the anti-roll bars, altered the steering ratio to improve steering comfort, and developed an optional Adaptive Chassis with electronically controlled shock absorbers.
All new X3 models will ship with the latest BMW Drive setup, which features the BMW Operating System 9 with a traditional iDrive Controller. BMW claims to have improved the driver assistance functions, noting that the sensitivity of the braking and steering interventions has been improved to create a more “harmonious interaction between driver and vehicle in every situation.”
The new X3 also supports BMW’s Parking and Manoeuvre Assistant, allowing the driver to control the SUV from outside using a smartphone.
BMW has not yet detailed the powertrains of the new X3, other than confirming it will be launched with both traditional combustion engines and an advanced plug-in hybrid. We understand that among the engines offered will be 2.0-liter four-cylinder petrol and diesel mills with mild-hybrid technology. An updated X3 xDrive30e PHEV is also expected and will likely use an updated electrified inline-four with over 288 hp.
