• Most powerful Urus yet combines a 612 hp V8 combustion motor with a 189 hp electric motor
  • Zero to 62 mph takes 3.4 seconds, putting it one tenth ahead of the Urus S, one down on the Performante
  • A 25.9 kWh battery gives an unexceptional claimed range of 37 miles

Lamborghini has finally added PHEV tech to the one car in its lineup that was crying out for a plug-in conversion. The Urus SE mates a 612 hp (620 PS) twin-turbo V8 combustion motor with a 189 hp (192 PS / 141 kW) electric motor housed inside the eight-speed transmission.

That combination nets 789 hp (800 PS), making the SE the most powerful Urus available, and hurls the SUV to 62 mph (100 kmh) in 3.4 seconds, a tenth faster than the 657 hp (666 PS) Urus S, but a tenth slower than the hardcore Performante.

A 25.9 kWh battery gives a claimed range of 37 miles, which is around half of what you’ll get out of the latest Range Rover PHEV, but will definitely add to its appeal, particularly in markets where there are tax benefits to driving a car with zero-emissions capability.

The Urus SE also introduces a new electro-hydraulic multi-plate clutch, which distributes driving torque variably between the front and rear axles. Lamborghini says this works in tandem with the new virtual LSD in the rear end to produced “on demand” oversteer. Junking the old car’s true mechanical limited slip diff reportedly saves 20 kg (44 lbs), though the 2,540 kg (5,600 lbs) hybrid still weighs over 300 kg (661 lbs) more than its non-hybrid brother, according to Autocar.

However, Lamborghini’s CTO, Rouven Mohr, told the website that the SE is as fast around a circuit as the less powerful (657 hp) but lighter and more driver-focused Urus Performante when equipped with the same tires.

Styling updates include a new hood that now extends right down to the revised grille, giving the nose a dash of Revuelto, new LED lights, and a redesigned rear hatch with a black transverse section linking the taillights that also provides a visual link to Lamborghini’s current supercars. The Galanthus wheels are also new, measure a substantial 23 inches across and come wrapped in Pirelli’s new P Zero rubber.

On the inside there’s a larger, 12.3-inch infotainment screen, the air vents look less boring (but still boring), seats and dashboards get new coverings and Lamborghini says it’s changed the materials on the console to give the switches a more tactile, mechanical feel.

The Urus SE is Lamborghini’s second PHEV, coming a year behind the V12 Revuelto supercar, but it won’t be its last. Later this year the automaker will unveil its successor to the Huracan, which will also feature plug-in tech, and by 2028 the three-car lineup becomes four with the arrival of the brand’s first ever EV, the Lanzador crossover. Not long after that, Lamborghini will introduce a second-generation Urus that will also be available with a fully electric drivetrain.
