• A one-off Lincoln Mark VIII pickup conversion will be auctioned without reserve on April 6.
  • The front remains largely unchanged, but the rear features a custom bed and window.
  • It has a 4.6L V8 engine delivering around 280hp, a 4-speed automatic transmission, and rear-wheel drive.

Luxury pickups are a hot commodity as long as they’re not offered by a premium brand. That’s a perplexing conundrum, but it has rung true multiple times.

Lincoln is the poster child of this as the brand launched the Blackwood in 2001. It was an abysmal failure thanks to a nearly useless bed and a rear-wheel drive only configuration. Lincoln addressed these problems with the Mark LT, but there was no hiding the fact it was nothing more than a fancier F-150 and it was dropped after a few years.

While Lincoln has failed on multiple occasions, one owner apparently decided to give it a go themselves. The result is this one-off Mark VIII pickup, which is known as the Markero. Inspired by the Ford Ranchero, the model reportedly took one and a half years to build. While it doesn’t look particularly interesting from the front, you’ll quickly notice something is amiss as you move further back.

The rear end has largely been gutted as the model loses its trunk and back roof. In their place is a small bed and a unique rear window. The craftsmanship doesn’t appear to be worthy of a Concours d’Elegance, but the overall design remains relatively faithful to the luxury coupe.

The car’s listing doesn’t say much, but the model features a gray leather interior that has obviously seen better days. The seats and steering wheel are worn, while the rear trim is falling apart. While the cabin isn’t pretty, the Mark VIII came equipped with six-way power front seats and an automatic climate control system. They were joined by a keyless entry system, cruise control, and an available 10-disc CD changer.

Under the hood, there’s a 4.6-liter V8 that presumably develops 280 hp (209 kW / 284 PS) and 285 lb-ft (386 Nm) of torque. It’s connected to a four-speed automatic transmission, which should send power to the rear wheels.

The Markero has 100,756 miles (162,151 km) on the odometer and will be auctioned off later this week by Mecum. There’s no auction estimate, but the model doesn’t have a reserve.
