- VW will introduce a new concept at the 2024 Beijing Auto Show.
- Official teasers reveal the aerodynamic silhouette and high-tech LEDs of the yet-unnamed concept.
- The “Design A New Era” motto shows that the concept will influence future production models by VW.
Volkswagen published multiple teasers of a new design study that will debut at the 2024 Beijing Auto Show. The yet-unnamed concept has been specifically developed for China, but it’ll preview a new design language that will likely be applied in future VW models.
The shadowy picture shows the streamlined silhouette, likely featuring a five-door bodystyle. The long hood and the aerodynamic roofline make it look like a sporty estate, or shooting brake. While we can’t see the wheels and the ground clearance, the shape of the tail and the pronounced fenders resemble a low-slung vehicle rather than a crossover or an SUV. Other teasers focus on the high-tech LEDs with a strong three-dimensional effect.

Overall, the design is largely new for Volkswagen, with the familiar bits limited to the strong C-pillar and the shape of the tailgate which sends Touareg vibes. The surfacing represents a departure from the existing ID family of models that has also influenced VW’s ICE-powered lineup.
It is not clear yet if the concept was created merely as a design study or if it will evolve into a production model for the Chinese market. In any case, VW’s latest concept will likely feature a fully electric powertrain. As for the interior, expect a heavier focus on connectivity and advanced technology to satisfy the needs of the particularly demanding Chinese customer base.
The new styling language was created by Andreas Mindt, who was appointed as Head of Volkswagen Design in January 2023, coming from Bentley. Mindt is not a newcomer to the German brand as he has previously worked on the exterior of the first-generation Tiguan, and the MK7 Golf among other projects within the VW Group.
The ID.2all concept, which is set to evolve into the production ID.2 subcompact electric hatchback by 2026, was a first sign of how future VW models will look like. The new concept is expected to feature a bolder and more dynamic expression of that style, introducing fresh elements and, fingers-crossed, a bit more character than the current VW lineup.
