- This one-of-a-kind F1 has only been driven 410 miles.
- It has spent most of its life in Japan before being imported into the U.S.
- It’s the world’s only F1 finished in Creighton Brown.
The most expensive road-going McLaren F1 ever sold is heading back to auction, less than three years after it shattered records and traded hands for $20,465,000.
This McLaren F1 is chassis 029 and is the only one finished in Creighton Brown. This color was named after McLaren’s former commercial director and when the car was sold in 2021, it was one of the lowest-mileage F1s in existence with just 387 km (240.5 miles) on the odometer. Fast forward to 2024 and the car has been driven 410 miles (254.8 miles) and will trade hands once again.

In 2021, the car was sold through Gooding & Company at a public auction. It has now been listed for sale through Sotheby’s Sealed and will go up for auction on May 13. It is unclear how much the car will fetch and unfortunately, the sales prices for vehicles sold through RM Sotheby’s Sealed service are not publicized, so we may never know. It is reasonable to assume it has gained $2-3 million in value over the past three years.
This F1 was originally delivered to a Japanese collector and remained in their collection for many years. It was later exported to the United States with a Show or Display exemption, spending its time in North Carolina. The sale includes the original FACOM tool chest, the owner’s manual, a custom luggage set, a titanium tool kit, and a one-off Tag Heuer watch that has been inscribed with the car’s chassis number.
There are just 64 McLaren F1s in road-going specification like this one. Power comes from a 6.1-liter naturally-aspirated V12 with 618 hp and 479 lb-ft (650 Nm), sent to the rear wheels via a six-speed manual transmission. McLaren F1 values have soared over the past decade and RM Sotheby’s says the car gains an average of $1 million in value each year.
