• Power is expected to come from the XM’s 4.4-liter twin-turbo hybrid V8 with 718 hp
  • BMW‘s new M5 Touring will rival the Audi RS6 Avant
  • The new super sedan and wagon models should debut in the coming months

It’s hard not to love the BMW M5 and the latest-generation model is just around the corner. Not only will it be more powerful than the car it replaces but it will be sold in sedan and Touring guises, both of which will be offered in the United States.

Earlier this month, BMW took camouflaged prototypes of the new M5 Sedan and Touring to the Nurburgring for some high-speed testing. These crystal-clear images of the two duo give us a good look at their aggressive styling before the veil is officially lifted.

The prototype sedan is painted matte black and has camo across the front and rear fascias, as well as on the roof. Despite the presence of this camo, we can see the carmaker has modified the car’s front fascia significantly, installing a new lower grille and making everything look much more menacing. The car also adopts muscular arches while found at the rear is a dramatic diffuser and quad tailpipes.

Of the pair, it’s the M5 Touring that we’re most excited about. It benefits from the same front-end treatment as the sedan but we think the overall shape of the estate makes it that much more appealing. BMW has also developed a sharp roof-mounted spoiler for the car. Anyone with an Audi RS6 Avant on order would be wise to put it on hold.

Most signs point towards the new M5 receiving the same plug-in hybrid powertrain as the BMW XM. If true, that means the new super sedan and super estates will have a 4.4-liter twin-turbocharged V8 working alongside an electric motor. BMW may detune this powertrain slightly from the XM Label Red, capping it to 718 hp and 760 lb-ft (1,030 Nm) of torque. This will give the car a near-100 hp advantage over the RS6.

BMW is expected to unveil the new M5 Sedan and M5 Touring this July.
