- A sinkhole developed after a crash in Arizona and began to envelop a car sitting above it.
- Authorities reported four injuries including one person in critical condition after the accident.
- Crews needed a crane to remove the sunken sedan long after the incident.
Getting into an accident is never good no matter, no matter the outcome, but for one Infiniti driver, the initial crash wasn’t the worst part. After a collision with a Ford SUV, the sedan hit a fire hydrant, causing the corner to flood. Then, the ground gave way, and the Infiniti began to sink into the earth itself.
The two cars came together at the corner of 75th Ave and Virginia Ave in Phoenix near the Desert Sky Mall. Authorities are still trying to determine how the crash happened at around 7:30 in the morning. Once the Infiniti came to rest the driver managed to escape before the ground began to swallow the car.

The parking lot of a nearby strip mall ended up flooded, and businesses there had to shut down for the day after the water was turned off for repairs. Hours after the flood subsided, a thick layer of mud remained on the lot. A recovery crew, including a rescue diver, had to break out the front windows and then use a strap and crane to lift the Infiniti out of the hole.
In total, four people were injured in the crash with the driver of the Ford left in critical condition as a result. The woman was rushed to the hospital and her condition is unknown as of this writing. The damage to the SUV is consistent with serious injuries.
The front passenger wheel and hub assembly were completely ripped off. The front passenger door was left unattached and resting on the front end.
Interestingly, the Phoenix area has been suffering from a number of sinkholes in recent weeks and months. For example, three different ones have appeared at Parkside Condominiums on Bell Road. As of a week ago, those are all under repair as is the one on 75th Avenue.
