• Shelby charges over $100,000 for its Super Snake upgrade package, excluding the price of the donor car.
  • Shoppers can cough up an extra $5,500 for the Convertible version.
  • Both a six-speed manual and an automatic transmission are available.

A month after the latest Ford Mustang-based Shelby Super Snake was unveiled, Shelby American has revealed the car will set back customers an eye-watering $159,995 before destination. To put that into perspective, you can buy an entry-level Chevrolet Corvette Z06 for $118,795.

U.S. production of the Shelby Super Snake will be capped at just 250 units and each example will be based on a Ford Mustang GT with the 401A Performance Pack. Shelby then installs the Super Snake Package that itself costs an eye-watering $100,555 for the Coupe and an extra $5,500 for the Convertible.

So, what do customers get for their money? A look at the car’s online configurator reveals the car can be finished in either Atlas Blue, Iconic Silver, Oxford White, Race Red, Rapid Red Metallic, and Shadow Black, while the Super Snape Graphics Package is offered in Satin Black, Satin Blue, Satin Silver, and Satin White. Both manual and automatic transmission options are available, although the latter comes with a $1,595 premium.

The most significant upgrade is the fitment of a Whipple supercharger to the 5.0-liter Coyote V8. This gives the pony car an incredible 830 hp. Other performance upgrades include a new radiator and heat exchanger, a Borla exhaust system, new half shafts, a one-piece drive shaft, and a short throw shifter. Shelby has also overhauled the car’s suspension system and fitted new brakes.

Shelby has also worked extensively on the body of the Mustang, fitting an aluminum hood, carbon fiber fenders, new grilles and intakes, and carbon fiber aero elements. Are these modifications enough to justify the car’s premium over a Corvette Z06?

Admittedly, the Mustang and Corvette are not direct competitors. After all, the Ford is a sports car that, in Super Snake form, offers lots of performance, while the Z06 is a legitimate, mid-engined supercar.

But, if we were spending this much on a car, we’d probably go with the Chevy even if, with 670 hp in stock guise, is significantly down on power compared to the Shelby. What would you do?
