• German tuner Manhart has taken five classic BMW E31 8-Series coupes and given them a new lease on life with a comprehensive restoration and performance upgrades.
  • The centerpiece of the upgrade is a 5.0-liter V8 engine sourced from the legendary E39 M5 producing 414 hp.
  • Manhart will only build five examples of the MH8 5.0 V8 Limited with this particular example priced at $162,000.

The E31 generation of the BMW 8-Series has gone down in history as one of the sexiest grand tourers of the ’90s. German tuner Manhart revisits this classic BMW, creating five restored and tastefully modified examples, each featuring a BMW M engine swap.

The highlight of Manhart’s E31 build is the installation of the S62 5.0-liter V8 engine sourced from the E39 M5. According to the tuner, the engine has been tuned to produce 414 hp (309 kW / 420 PS), sending power to the rear wheels via a six-speed manual gearbox.

Despite having four fewer cylinders, the more modern V8 produces an extra 118 hp (88 kW / 120 PS) compared to the original V12, easily outperforming even the flagship 850 CSi. Additionally, a stainless steel sports exhaust enhances the sound experience, emphasizing the “low-frequency rumble” of the new powertrain.

To support the engine swap, Manhart upgraded the chassis of the E31, with H&R lowering springs, Bilstein B6 shocks, and beefier brakes. The car rides on a new set of 20-inch alloy wheels, completely filling up the wheel arches and lining up with the boxy fenders.

Setting aside the significantly larger wheels, exterior modifications are limited to front and rear skirts from the 850 CSi, a rear spoiler lip, and M-style mirrors. The car has also been repainted as part of a three-year restoration project, while the 2+2 cabin has been reupholstered in leather and Alcantara. Manhart says that all axle components were blasted and refurbished, with the rubbers and bearings being renewed.

As suggested by its name, the MH8 5.0 V8 Limited 01/05 will be produced in five units. The first example, shown in the gallery, is priced at €149,000 ($162,000). As a classic, the modified E31 is eligible for H license plates in Germany.
