New car registrations in the European Union have increased through the first four months of the year and the share of hybrid vehicles has made a considerable jump.

During January and April, 3.7 million new cars were registered across the EU, representing a 6.6% increase from the year prior. Solid growth was experienced across the continent, particularly in Germany and Spain which both saw a 7.8% increase, France where sales rose by 7%, and Italy where sales jumped by 6.1%.

The share of petrol and diesel vehicle sales accounted for 48.9% of the market in April, a drop from the 52.8% market share they had in April 2023 and can be partly explained by hybrid vehicles increasing their share from 24.9% to 29.1%. Interestingly, petrol car sales did climb by 7.3% last month to 328,967 units, driven by gains in Spain (+24.1%), Germany (+18.6%), and Italy (+14.1%).

The diesel market remained steady in April with 118,000 units sold, accounting for a 13% share. Diesel sales rose by a significant 28.1% in Germany but fell by 21.1% in Italy, 19.3% in Spain, and 18.1% in France.

Interest in electrified vehicles continues to grow across the European Union. Sales of traditional hybrid vehicles soared by 33.1% in April, driven by a 48.1% increase in France, 38.5% in Spain, and 25.9% in Germany. A total of 265,992 hybrids were sold in April. The sales of plug-in hybrids increased by 3.7% last month, totaling 62,148 units.

Battery-electric car registrations also spiked by 14.8% last month to 108,552 units, with 45.2% and 41.6% increases reported in France and Belgium respectively. Their market share is holding steady at 11.9%. Between January and April, 441,992 new battery electric cars were registered across the EU, a 6.4% increase.
