- A new Dodge patent suggests the Charger’s R-wing could get adjustable flaps for improved downforce at high speeds.
- The active flaps might work similarly to those found on the Pagani Huayra.
- It’s unclear which Charger variant might get this technology, but it could be a future high-performance model.
The intriguing R-wing of the new-generation Dodge Charger could become even more advanced based on information uncovered in a recent United States Patent and Trademark Office filing (USPTO).
Dodge has designed the standard R-wing as an aero pass-through in the Charger’s front fascia, but they aren’t done developing it. A new patent unearthed by Carbuzz depicts a revised version of the R-wing with adjustable flaps that could help increase downforce. These flaps appear to work similarly to the active aerodynamic flaps found on the Pagani Huayra.

It appears that Dodge’s engineers want to house actuators for the flaps in the central beam of the R-wing, keeping them hidden from view. The flaps could operate independently or as a single unit.
In the patent filing, Dodge says the flap in its normal position has been “configured to provide drag and front lift reduction” while one or more actuators would be used to “adjust the angle of attack.” Dodge adds it could be beneficial to have the two flaps operating independently to “aid in certain driving maneuvers such as turning at high speeds.”
Dodge points out that this innovative wing could be adjusted automatically based on driving conditions, including the driving mode, ambient temperature, or speed. Additionally, the wing’s angle could be manually adjustable from inside the vehicle.
Dodge has already unveiled the combustion and battery-electric versions of the 2024 Charger, and neither of them has adjustable R-wing flaps as depicted in this patent. Therefore, if these active aerodynamic flaps were to reach production, they likely wouldn’t arrive until the launch of a new flagship version of either the ICE or EV model.
We know of at least one 800-volt Charger Daytona EV range-topper that’s in the works, and it could be the perfect vehicle for Dodge to premiere this active aero on.
