• The Frontera is positioned between the smaller Mokka and the larger Grandland in Opel’s expanded SUV lineup, while being cheaper than both.
  • It is available in 5-seater and 7-seater configurations, mirroring the closely-related Citroen C3 Aircross.
  • The ICE Frontera is equipped with a mild-hybrid 1.2-liter engine, while the Electric version offers over 300 km (186 miles) of range.

The all-new Opel Frontera made its first public outing in Istanbul, Turkey, replacing the aging Crossland with a larger body and modern Stellantis underpinnings. Serving as the SUV twin of the Citroen C3 Aircross, it is available in both mild-hybrid and fully electric variants, with prices starting from around €24,000 ($25,900) in Germany. Opel has also announced the option for a seven-seater layout in addition to the standard five-seater version.

The digital premiere of the Opel Frontera, which will be offered as a Vauxhall in the UK, took place last month, unveiling both the exterior and interior design of the new model. This time around, Opel showcased the Frontera in person, providing additional details about the powertrain options, trim structure, and starting prices.

The Frontera marks the debut of the new Opel ‘Blitz’ emblem on its vizor fascia, accompanied by contemporary LED lighting. While the front and rear designs embrace Opel’s latest styling language, the proportions and greenhouse are shared with its Citroen C3 Aircross counterpart.

The company has opted for a streamlined trim structure consisting of two levels: the entry-level Frontera and the flagship Frontera GS. These can be paired with two optional packages

Inside, the Frontera GS boasts a digital cockpit equipped with dual 10-inch displays integrated into the same panel. Additionally, all versions include a standard ‘smartphone station’ and numerous practical features, emphasizing the SUV’s family-oriented nature.

In its five-seater configuration, the boot boasts a capacity of over 450 liters (15.9 cubic feet), expanding to 1,600 liters (56.5 cubic feet) when the seats are folded. Opel has confirmed plans to introduce a three-row, seven-seater layout for the Frontera in the near future, catering to the needs of larger families. Additionally, optional roof rails are available, capable of supporting a maximum weight of 240 kg (529 pounds), including a specifically-designed roof tent with an integrated ladder for the SUV.

Two Mild-Hybrid and Two EV Options

The Opel / Vauxhall Frontera Hybrid is equipped with the widely used turbocharged 1.2-liter gasoline engine, complemented by a 48V mild-hybrid system. The internal combustion engine (ICE) generates 99 hp (74 kW / 100 PS), with an additional 28 hp (21 kW / 28 PS) provided by a single electric motor integrated into the six-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission. Power is exclusively sent to the front wheels.

Additionally, a more potent variant of the Frontera Hybrid will be available, featuring the 134 hp (100 kW / 136 PS) version of the 1.2-liter engine paired with the same mild-hybrid setup.

While the automaker has not disclosed the specifications of the Opel Frontera Electric, they have promised a WLTP range exceeding 300 km (186 miles) in standard form, and approximately 400 km (249 miles) in a long-range version.

The flagship EV trim could utilize the 154 hp (156 PS / 115 kW) e-motor and 54 kWh battery configuration commonly found in the majority of Stellantis EVs, while a simpler setup may be reserved for the entry-level model. It’s worth mentioning that the Citroen e-C3 supermini, which shares the same budget-friendly Smart Car architecture, is offered with a less potent 111 hp (83 kW / 113 PS) e-motor and a smaller 44 kWh battery pack

In Germany, the Frontera Hybrid will start from around €24,000 ($25,900), while the Frontera Electric is priced from approximately €29,000 ($31,282). This positions it as the most affordable electric SUV in its size category, significantly undercutting the smaller Mokka Electric, which starts from €40,800 in the same market.
