- Rivian just issued a recall of 127 vehicles including both the R1T and R1S.
- The problem dates back to an assembly line issue where safety stickers weren’t applied.
- The automaker will send the decals to owners in the post.
Rivian has a new, small but important safety recall on its books. 127 of its R1 class vehicles, in both SUV and pickup truck forms, are out there with a potentially missing sticker. That decal is an airbag label that sits on the dashboard. Without it, there is a greater risk to children and infants for uninformed owners.
The danger there is that kids get impacted by airbags in a different way than adults. Young ones in rear-facing seats strapped into the front seats of cars are especially vulnerable. An airbag that goes off could cause serious brain damage or even death if a kid is in a rear-facing seat like that. It’s such a big safety issue that most direction recommends that children below 13 years old always sit in the back seats.

Rivian says that from February 19, 2024, through March 8, 2024, 127 vehicles that left the factory might not have the decal in question. Of these, the automaker believes that only four percent will actually be missing the sticker. Interestingly, Rivian spotted the issue during a production audit where it found just one vehicle without the sticker.
Those concerned that their vehicle might be part of the recall population can figure it out on their own pretty quickly. Take a quick look at the dash. If the sticker is there, then no, it won’t be included. If the sticker is missing… you might be one of the unlucky 127 that need a fix. Interestingly, those folks will actually have the chance to carry out that fix themselves.
Rivian could send a technician out to fix the problem or asked owners to travel to a service site. However, it has come up with a far simpler solution. The automaker is mailing the sticker in question to affected owners along with their recall notice itself. In an automotive landscape full of clever over-the-air recall remedies, this is truly a unique fix only available thanks to old-school snail mail. Expect those letters to arrive on or before June 21, 2024.
