- The R1T and R1S can already be ordered with the optional Performance motors for $5,000.
- An over-the-air software update will unlock the full performance credentials of base Dual Motor models.
- There’s no word on when the update will be introduced.
Rivian is planning to make R1T and R1S models fitted with its dual-motor powertrain even faster with an over-the-air software update.
The American car manufacturer currently sells standard and Performance-focused versions of its dual motor powertrain. The standard model is capped at 533 hp while the $5,000 Performance Pack available on newly-configured models increases this to 665 hp. As it stands, this pack is only available when a new R1T or R1S is ordered from the factory. However, this will soon change as the Performance Pack will become an option existing standard Dual Motor owners can pay for.

A post on the Rivian Forums announced the news but limited details are known at this stage. The standard Dual Motor model can reach 60 mph (96 km/h) in 4.5 seconds while the Performance version needs just 3.5 seconds. That means it’s almost as quick as the Quad Motor AWD powertrain that can send the R1T and R1S to 60 mph (96 km/h) in 3.0 seconds flat.
Rivian charges $5,000 for the Performance Pack for newly-ordered vehicles. The availability of this pack as an over-the-air-software update available after delivery means more R1T and R1S will slip under the $80,000 federal EV tax credit threshold.
For example, a new R1T ordered with the Large Battery Pack and the Performance Pack costs $84,000. When the software update is launched, shoppers will be able to order a standard Dual Motor R1T with the Large Battery Pack for $79,000 and benefit from the $7,500 federal EV tax credit. They’ll then be able to get the Performance upgrade.
Earlier this week, it was revealed that numerous R1T and R1S models are available with some compelling discounts. Models like the Large Battery Dual Motor are available with savings of up to $6,000 while models including the Large Battery Performance Dual-Motor and Quad-Motor are eligible for savings of up to $4,000.
