- The Ford F-150 beat all-electric trucks in registrations in March by at least double if not more.
- The Tesla Cybertruck firmly secured second place with double the registrations of the Rivian R1T.
- All three handily beat both the GMC Hummer EV and the Chevrolet Silverado EV
The Ford F-150 has been the undisputed heavyweight champ of pickup trucks for so long, it’s practically grown a beard of chrome. Now, the F-150 Lightning is poised to become the EV equivalent: a familiar silhouette crushing the competition with a combination of affordability, accessibility, and…well, maybe a little less visual eccentricity.
In March, it certainly left Tesla’s Cybertruck and Rivian‘s R1T in the dust, outselling both of them combined.

According to S&P Global data, the F-150 Lightning racked up 2,893 registrations in March, nearly tripling its numbers from the same month in 2022. While it may lack the Cybertruck’s flamboyant design, that’s also likely a contributing factor to its popularity. Speaking of the slab-sided Tesla, it surprisingly edged out every other electric truck in March registrations, despite its unconventional look.
In total, data reported by AutoNews shows 1,158 new Cybertruck registrations. “In its fourth month, the Cybertruck had over a thousand registrations and outsold the R1T by more than two to one,” said Tom Libby, associate director of industry analysis at S&P Global Mobility. “And frankly, I’m a little bit surprised. The Cybertruck is very, very unique, and it’s interesting that it’s been able to do that type of volume so quickly.”
The Rivian R1T came in third with 548. Clearly, the F-150 is popular but a deeper dive into the numbers might indicate why. The Tesla starts at just shy of six figures. That’s a steep price to pay regardless of the other players in the market. Comparing them though shows that Rivian and Ford buyers can pay less.
EV Pickup Sales March 2024
The R1T recently received a price cut to $71,700, including shipping, while the Lightning starts at $57,090 with shipping. Of course, pricing isn’t the only factor to consider. The Cybertruck is popular for various reasons, including its novelty. That’s why it’s somewhat surprising to see the GMC Hummer EV lagging far behind the pack with only 192 registrations in March. Interestingly, the Chevrolet Silverado EV actually outperformed it with 319 registrations.
Notably, some of this data might not be perfect. Tesla doesn’t report U.S. sales data and Rivian doesn’t reveal how many R1Ts it sold either.
