- Elon Musk had previously said he wanted to bring the entire Steam catalog to new Tesla vehicles.
- It doesn’t appear existing Model S and Model Xs with Steam compatibility will be impacted.
- The carmaker hasn’t explained why new models no longer support Steam.
Tesla is no longer delivering new Model S and Model X vehicles with support for Steam games, a feature the carmaker launched in late 2022 to much fanfare.
When Tesla included Steam integration into the infotainment system of the Model S and Model X eighteen months ago, it allowed owners to play thousands of different games. The carmaker even described its new vehicles as a “gaming rig” and they had been powerful enough to play games including Cyberpunk 2077.

However, Tesla has started to inform owners of new Model S and Model Xs that their vehicles will not be capable of playing Steam games.
“Tesla is updating the gaming computer in your Model X and your vehicle is no longer capable of playing Steam games. All other entertainment and app functionalities are unaffected,” the memo reads.
As we’ve come to expect from Tesla, the change has been made without any explanation. Electrek suspects the brand may have dropped the feature after discovering not many people were using it. That’s hardly a surprise given that most people use a car as a car and not a gaming device. The system had only been available when the vehicle was in Park and for some, may have been a good way to kill time while charging.
Tesla does not appear to be removing Steam functionality for those Model Ss and Model Xs already delivered with the feature.
While news of Steam functionality being dropped from new Tesla models will disappoint some, the company has more pressing matters it should be concerned with. For example, a U.S. District Judge recently ruled Tesla must face a proposed class-action lawsuit in court which alleges it’s lied about the autonomous driving capabilities of its vehicles.
