• VinFast is recalling nearly 300 vehicles because they may be equipped with non-functioning airbags.
  • The crossovers have an inert ignitor, which was only meant to be used in pre-production models.

VinFast is recalling 284 VF 8s in the United States as the crossovers may be equipped with non-functional airbags. This is a serious safety issue and 52 vehicles are already in customer hands.

According to the Safety Recall Report, 2022-2024 VF 8 vehicles may have accidently been equipped with inert airbag inflators. The company first became aware of the issue on April 19, when a customer in Vietnam brought their crossover to a dealership because the airbag warning light was on.

The dealer looked into the matter and discovered the front passenger side airbag was equipped with an inert ignitor. These were only supposed to be fitted to pre-production vehicles to “ensure the safety of engineers during … final development testing.”

VinFast launched an investigation and determined there was an “unreasonable risk to safety,” so they decided to conduct a voluntary recall. The automaker has also issued a stop-ship and stop-sale order globally for the impacted vehicles.

No accidents or injuries have been reported, and the fix is straightforward as dealers will install new airbags with an active ignitor. Customers will be notified shortly, but vehicles equipped with an inert ignitor will illuminate the airbag warning light to warn consumers.
