- The special edition features a mixture of M Sport and Sport design elements, with a focus on off-road ability.
- Despite the “Silver” theme, the SUV is painted Lime Rock Grey metallic and features black or brown interior options.
- Only around 1,000 units of the limited-edition BMW X5 will be produced, priced at $79,900.
It seems like yesterday that the thought of a “5 Series” on stilts was an alien concept. And yet, 25 years later, the BMW X5 has proved to be one of the most important models in the Bavarian carmaker’s lineup. To celebrate, the company has announced the X5 Silver Anniversary Edition. It’s based on the 2025 X5 xDrive40i but focuses a bit more towards off-roading.
Even though it’s a “Silver” anniversary model, this special edition has surprisingly few silver elements. First, BMW has missed a trick by painting the car in grey. Close enough, perhaps: it’s a BMW Individual color known as Lime Rock Grey metallic. There’s even less silver with the standard Extended Shadowline trim, which includes darker trim on the window surrounds, roof rails, fender-mounted Air Breathers, and the (shudder) illuminated kidney grille.

Inside, you have a choice of Black, Cognac, Coffee, or Silverstone Sensafin upholstery. There are also sports seats and the same carbon fiber trim usually reserved for the X5 M Competition and X5 M60i.
BMW isn’t billing this as a Sport or M Sport model; instead, it borrows from both packages. So you get 20-inch M Star-spoke bi-color wheels from the M Sport Package, whereas the bumpers are aluminum-accented pieces from the Sport Design. The latter is said to be more off-road oriented compared to the Motorsport-inspired X5 M Sport.
Speaking of tackling the rough stuff, the Silver Anniversary Edition X5 comes standard with BMW’s xOffroad Package. Similar to Land Rover’s Terrain Response system, the offroad package adds a smart four-wheel-drive management system that can tackle a variety of terrains via a control panel. It will optimize multiple functions for different terrains, including shift points, throttle mapping, and traction control.
The xOffroad Package isn’t offered as standard on any other model in the X5 range, which is understandable when you think about how few buyers actually take their X5 offroad. However, it comes with some rather useful features that make the BMW SUV more capable in some mild off-road scenarios.
In addition to the fancy 4WD management system, you also get two-axle air suspension, a mechanical locking rear differential, and underbody protection plates. And, although they don’t come as standard, BMW is willing to throw in a discount on General Grabber All-Terrain tires purchased and installed at their dealer.
That discount may come in handy, with the BMW X5 Silver Anniversary Edition coming in at a not-so-cheap $79,900 plus $1,175 destination and handling fees. BMW says, rather vaguely, that there will be “about” 1,000 units of the Silver Anniversary Edition X5 produced, with production scheduled to commence in August.
