- The 5 Door is 172 mm (6.7 inches) longer than the base Mini Cooper 3 door and has a wheelbase extended by 72 mm (2.8-inch)
- Mini has confirmed the entry-level Cooper C and flagship Cooper S versions, both powered by gasoline engines.
- The new model has a simpler interior than the old Cooper 5 Door featuring a large digital instrument cluster.
Mini’s ever-growing range continues to expand with the launch of the latest Cooper 5 Door. The hatchback has only been unveiled in combustion guise so far, but an all-electric version is believed to be in the works. So, what makes this different than the old Mini Cooper 5-Door?
Well, like the new 3 Door model unveiled last year, the design is quite a bit different yet still retains that classic Mini look and shape. Predictably, it closely resembles the 3 Door in design, albeit with the inclusion of two additional doors. Consequently, the front end features sleek, circular headlights with LED daytime running lights and a sizable split black grille. The painted bar dividing the grille is marginally slimmer than that of the 3 Door.

The new larger Mini has grown in size over its smaller sibling to accommodate two extra doors. It’s now 4,036 mm (158.9 inches) long or 172 mm (6.7 inches) longer while also having a 72 mm (2.8-inch) longer wheelbase. The short overhangs of the 3 Door are retained, while the familiar triangular taillights are found at the rear.
In Europe, the Cooper 5 Door will have two gasoline (petrol) engines. The first is a small turbocharged 1.5-liter three-cylinder producing 156 hp and 170 lb-ft (230 Nm) of torque, set to be available exclusively in the entry-level Cooper C. This model has a 0-62 mph (100 km/h) time of 8 seconds and can reach 134 mph (225 km/h).
Those after a little more punch can opt for the Cooper S with a 2.0-liter four-cylinder rated at 204 hp and 221 lb-ft (300 Nm). The Cooper S boasts a 0-62 mph (100 km/h) time of 6.8 seconds and tops out at 150 mph (242 km/h).
Mini says the new Cooper 5 Door has a “suspension and damping system tuned for spirited handling,” with the option for adaptive suspension featuring frequency-selective dampers. The hatch will be available with wheel sizes ranging from 16 to 18 inches, while those opting for 17-inch or 18-inch wheels will benefit from wider 215 mm (8.4-inch) tires.
Inside, four trims are available. The first is the Essential Trim and includes black seats with patterned fabric, while the Classic Trim ditches the standard two-spoke steering wheel in favor of a three-spoke one. A Favored Trim with a two-tone houndstooth pattern on the dash is also rather stylish. There’s also a sporty JCW Trim with multi-colored knitted fabric and black imitation leather with red stitching.
Regardless of which trim customers go with, all new five-door Mini Coopers have a large circular, 9.4-inch OLED display in the center of the dash running the latest Mini Operating System 9, including the Mini Intelligent Personal Assistant. Seven different interior modes can be configured through the display to alter the feel and ambiance of the cabin.
Mini will sell the new Cooper 5 Door in eleven body colors and three contrasting colors for the roof. Market-specific pricing hasn’t been confirmed.
