• Facelifted BMW iX prototype spied at the Nurburgring.
  • Performance M60 version will become M70 to fit in with other new BMWs.
  • Revised face includes new LED light units, a glowing grille, and a more prominent lower bumper.

A year from now BMW will begin unleashing its Neue Klasse generation of cars, starting with the iX3 electric SUV. And to make sure the new compact EV doesn’t upstage its pricier big brother, the iX is getting a little nip and tuck around the same time.

Expected to launch in spring 2025 as a 26MY for the U.S., BMW’s revised electric flagship won’t look radically different to the one that’s been splitting opinions since 2020. But it will adopt some detail improvements, including a glowing outline for the huge grille and a new set of LED lights.

Some sources suggest the new lights will be slimmer than the current model’s but we’re not seeing it. We think it’s just the camouflage tape on the bottom portion of the light that makes them look narrower. The fact that BMW is sticking with one-piece light units rather than going the split-light route as used by every other high-priced BMW makes the iX an anomaly in the automaker’s lineup.

Disguise panels under the camo wrap mean we can’t see the final design of the outer portions of the new bumpers, but it does look like the front splitter might be larger this time around, and there could also be some subtle changes being readied for the rear bumper.

Those changes are unlikely to persuade anyone driving the current iX to rush down to a dealer to upgrade the moment the order book opens, but maybe the changes taking place under the skin – and the new badges signposting those changes – will.

An iX xDrive45 will replace the xDrive40, the xDrive60 will replace the xDrive50 and the range will be topped by the iX M70 seen in these images, which takes the place of today’s iX M60. The M60 currently makes 610 hp (619 PS / 455 kW), but the M70 is likely to get the i7’s 650 hp (660 PS / 485 kW) setup, probably in conjunction with an improved driving range.
