• A new Ford Mustang Dark Horse burned down after a clutch malfunction in April.
  • The owner spoke to Carscoops and provided in-car dashcam footage of the incident.
  • His experience with Ford has been a positive one and he’s already bought a replacement Dark Horse.

The new Ford Mustang Dark Horse might be a stallion, but this owner’s ride went up in flames faster than a matchstick at a gas pump. While cruising down the road, they suffered a clutch pedal failure, and shortly thereafter, their prized pony car was ablaze. They spoke to Carscoops to detail the fiery ordeal, how Ford handled everything, and provide in-car footage of the vehicle as it went up in flames.

The incident happened back in April and we initially covered what we knew at the time. A fire occurred after the clutch pedal became stuck in the depressed position. It was unclear then what would happen with the car, but dashcam footage confirms much of the owner’s account.

The owner, who we’ll call John since he prefers to remain anonymous, says that he was trying to shift out of fifth gear when the clutch pedal stayed glued to the floor. Despite reaching down and trying to pry it back up with his hand, nothing seemed to correct the problem.

His daughter, who was sitting alongside him, encouraged him to pull over. Once he did, the car stalled out and John began attempting to diagnose the situation.

Again, his daughter spoke up, saying she could smell something burning. Sure enough, as soon as he popped the hood, he saw smoke. “I called my wife, she called 911. We had nothing to put it out,” he tells Carscoops. “The fire grew, and I guess it ruptured the fuel rails because it flashed and turned into a raging inferno.”

That entire experience is chronicled in the video above. While it might be a sad end to the life of that particular Mustang, John says that Ford went above and beyond his expectations in the aftermath.

“They repurchased the vehicle at 100% plus taxes and reimbursed me for the receipts I submitted for the minor things I had done to it like tint, dash cam, front splitter, etc,” he tells us.

The entire process was completed in under eight weeks, and John’s now the proud owner of a brand new Dark Horse. That’s some seriously swift service from Ford, on top of reimbursing him for all those extras. If anything, it shows they really care about keeping their customers happy, even when things go up in smoke.
