• Ford’s electric and hybrid vehicle sales saw a significant increase of nearly 65% in May 2024 compared to the same month last year.
  • For the first five months of 2024, Ford’s EV sales have jumped an impressive 87.8% year-over-year.
  • Despite the impressive EV growth, traditional gasoline-powered vehicles remain the dominant force in overall sales numbers.

Ford reported strong growth for electrified vehicles through May 2024. Compared to last year, both EVs and hybrids saw significant increases: EV sales nearly doubled, surging by 87.8%, while hybrids rose by 50.9%. However, despite the impressive gains, internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles remain the dominant force in terms of overall sales volume.

Overall, the Blue Oval’s U.S. sales for January-May 2024 recorded a 5.6% increase over the same period in 2023, with a total of 877,685 units delivered.

Overall, Ford’s U.S. sales for the first five months of 2024 increased by 5.6% compared to the same period in 2023, with a total of 877,685 units delivered. While gas-powered vehicles still hold the majority share of sales at 87.3% (766,428 units), electrified options are gaining ground with hybrids now holding an 8.4% market share (74,049 units sold), and electric vehicle a 4.3% share (37,208 units).

Breakdown by body style reveals a continued preference for larger vehicles. Trucks remain the leader with 460,006 units sold (+2.5%), followed by SUVs with a significant 9.9% increase to 394,141 units. Cars, on the other hand, represent a shrinking segment with only 23,538 units sold (a mere +0.4%), all of which were Mustangs, as it’s the sole remaining low-slung model in Ford’s American lineup.

In terms of individual model sales, the most impressive increase year-to-date was recorded by the Ford Mustang Mach-E, which sold 88.7% more units compared to last year totaling at 18,737. This is likely due to the heavily discounted prices, which have enticed more buyers to consider the electric crossover.

Ford’s two other electric offerings in the US, the F-150 Lightning truck and the E-Transit van, have also seen impressive sales growth. The F-150 Lightning boasts 13,093 sales year-to-date, reflecting a significant increase of 78.5%, fueled by the large discounts for the remaining 2023MYs. The E-Transit van isn’t far behind, achieving strong sales of 5,378 units and a huge year-to-date growth of 111.2%.

ICE is a bit of a mixed bag

Another model with great sales performance is the Ford Maverick with 64,754 units sold between January and May (+84.9%). On the other end of the spectrum, Ranger sales fell by -44.4% to 10,948, possibly affected by production shortages in certain months. The situation is not great for the Ford Bronco which saw its sales dipping by -16.1% to 42,061 units.

Ford’s internal combustion lineup paints a contrasting picture. The compact Ford Maverick continues to impress, racking up strong year-to-date sales of 64,754 units, reflecting a stellar growth of 84.9%. However, production issues have hampered other models. Ranger sales significantly dropped by 44.4%, reaching 10,948 units in the first five months of the year. However, in May, the Ranger reported a 17.5% increase in sales over the same month in 2023.

Similarly, the Bronco, though facing a 16.1% year-to-date decline with 42,061 units sold, also enjoyed a strong 17.9% sales increase in May 2024 year-over-year.
