• The R7 coupe-SUV will join the S7 sedan in Luxeed’s lineup for the Chinese market.
  • The model is developed by Huawei and Chery as part of the HIMA project
  • It is expected to be available in BEV and EREV versions, packing the latest technology from Huawei.

The lineup of Huawei-backed vehicles in China will soon expand with a new coupe-SUV that will be available with BEV and EREV (range-extender) powertrain options. The Luxeed R7, developed by Huawei and Chery, joins the mechanically-related S7 sedan with a sleek SUV shape promising a more spacious cabin.

The first photos of the Luxeed R7 were shared on Chinese social media Weibo by Yu Chengdong, who is the head of Huawei’s Smart Car Solutions program. Chengdong said that the R7 moniker comes from the world revolution, claiming that the new model will surpass rivals from well-established premium automakers.

The exterior design is consistent with the styling language found in other models by the Aito, Luxeed, and Stelato brands. Predictably, the shape of the LED lighting units and the surfacing of the bodywork are shared with the S7 sedan, albeit in a taller body. The same applies to the ADAS sensors – including the roof-mounted Lidar – powering Huawei’s Qiankun ADS 3.0 automated driving system.

Luxeed has yet to show us the interior of the R7, but earlier spy shots from China suggest it will share the same dashboard design and technology with the S7 sedan. The latter comes with a 15.6-inch display running on Huawei’s HarmonyOS system. As for the available space for occupants and their luggage, Chengdong promises that the R7 will “exceed expectations”.

Luxeed R7 Is The First Huawei-Backed Coupe SUV

Luxeed has yet to announce the specifications of the R7 but according to information that surfaced online it will measure 4,950 mm (194.9 inches) long with a 2,950 mm (116.1 inches) wheelbase. This footprint is similar to the ICE-powered coupe-SUVs like the BMW X6 and Mercedes GLE Coupe, positioning it in between the Model Y and Model X from Tesla.

According to Car News China, both the BEV and EREV versions of the Luxeed R7 will feature an 800V architecture, using silicon carbide high-voltage batteries. Judging from the sedan, the coupe-SUV will be available with a single electric motor producing 288 hp (215 kW / 292 PS), or dual electric motors producing 489 hp (365 kW / 496 PS). Local media Autohome mentions a maximum CLTC range of 855 km (531 miles), which is consistent with the sedan.

The market launch of the Luxeed R7 in China is expected for the third quarter of the year. Pricing will likely be in the region of ¥300,000-400,000 ($41,400-55,200), which would make it ¥50,000 ($6,900) more expensive compared to the Luxeed S7.

Luxeed (Huawei/Chery) is a mid-spec brand sitting above the SUV-focused Aito (Huawei/Seres) and below the more premium Stelato (Huawei/BAIC). The HIMA project will soon gain its fourth brand (Huawei/JAC) that’s set to debut an ultra-luxurious flagship sedan.
