Forget Subtle, Japan’s Maybach S 580 Night Edition Goes All Out

Japanese chauffeurs and high-rollers have another option for a high-end, high-priced luxury sedan with the introduction of the limited-run Mercedes-Maybach S 580 Night Edition. The new model is capped at just 30 units with prices starting at 44 million yen (~$279,000).

All examples bound for the production line feature the same two-tone Onyx Black and Mojave Silver design. The S 580 Night Edition also sports dark rose gold accents across the front grille, front air intake shrouds, door handles, and a piece of trim on the rocker panels. The dark rose gold accents continue across the rear and include the tailpipes and trim on the rear bumper.

While the car’s exterior is relatively restrained, the wheels aren’t so subtle. The 20-inch aluminum rims have seven main spokes, and dozens of little Maybach emblems are located between them. On most cars, wheels like this would look a little tacky, but they somehow work on the S 580 Night Edition.

The interior of a luxurious sedan like this is the most important area by far. It’s fitting then that Mercedes-Maybach has adorned it with plush white leather on the seats, door panels, center console, and transmission tunnel. See the piano black console beneath the infotainment screen? It’s not just any regular piano black surface as it includes tiny Maybach emblems. The key is also bathed in dark rose gold surfaces.

Driving the car is the same 4.0-liter twin-turbocharged V8 as the regular Maybach S 580, complete with a 48-volt mild-hybrid system and pumping out 496 hp through all four wheels.

As mentioned, just 30 examples of the S 580 Night Edition will be built. Japanese media says that if more than 30 applications are made to purchase the car, Mercedes will hold a lottery to decide on the lucky owners. The first deliveries are penciled in for next month.
