Rewind 20 or 30 years, and Mitsubishi was developing and producing a slew of impressive performance cars, none more beloved than the fabled Lancer Evolution. However, did you also know that the Japanese brand built an Evo version of the Pajero?
This special model was built so Mitsubishi could comply with homologation requirements for the Paris-Dakar Rally. Just over 2,600 examples were built, and finding one imported into the United States in good condition isn’t easy. Fortunately, one has just appeared for auction through Bring a Trailer, and it could be the perfect buy for any rally enthusiast.

This Pajero Evolution was imported from Japan in 2018 and acquired by the selling dealer earlier this year. It’s painted in Sophia White and has only been driven ~61,000 miles (~98,000 km). It’s also rocking bright red mud flaps and has a special black, grey, and red Evolution livery across the sides.
Despite what you may expect, the Pajero Evolution doesn’t feature the Lancer Evo’s fabled 4G63 four-cylinder. Instead, it has a larger 3.5-liter V6 rated at an impressive 275 hp. This engine sends power to all four wheels through a five-speed automatic transmission. It also features a dual-range transfer case, a locking center differential, and limited-slip differentials at both the front and rear. It’s not just quick on the street, but this SUV is also fast off the beaten path.
Dramatic bodywork modifications immediately distinguish the Pajero Evolution from a standard model. There are flared fenders, unique bumpers, hood scoops, and a huge roof spoiler. It sits on unique 16-inch wheels with Continental TerrainContact H/T tires. Recaro seats, a cassette radio, automatic climate control, and some trim pieces made from faux carbon fiber are found inside the cabin.
