Future Rivian models could have removable roof panels if the new system patented by the manufacturer reaches production.

A recent filing published by the United States Patent and Trademark Office shows that the EV startup has created a sliding latch mechanism that makes roof panels quick and easy to remove. The latch works similarly to the removable roof panels found on the Jeep Wrangler, for example, but with one key difference.

Whereas the panels of the Wrangler have to be unlatched manually, Rivian’s patent depicts latches that could be driven by an actuator, making them easier to remove. The roof panels could then be stored in a compartment, Motor Authority reports.

Given how focused the R1T and R1S are on off-road enthusiasts, it’s a surprise it hasn’t already offered the option of removable roof panels for its vehicles. The Jeep Wrangler pioneered the multi-configurable roof setup and Ford followed with the Bronco. Admittedly, the R1T and R1S are both more expensive and more luxurious than the Jeep and Ford, but adding the option of a removable roof panel will surely make them even more desirable among the target audience. And if you’re not a fan, there’s always the standard glass roof Rivian offers.

Rivian Patents Removable Roof Panels For Its EVs

In 2021, Rivian announced that the R1T would receive a removable roof option the following year, but it never came to fruition.

A couple of weeks ago, news of a separate Rivian patent emerged online. In that case, the vehicle R1 series of models was showcased with a large canopy extending out of a storage box on the roof. This canopy included inflatable tubular arms that could be made from plastic, nylon, rubber, or latex and was designed to support it under six inches of snow and wind speeds of up to 30 mph (48 km/h).
