- Toyota and Lexus are recalling over 145,000 Grand Highlander and TX crossovers.
- They are equipped with a side curtain airbag that can move outside the vehicle if the driver’s window is lowered.
- There’s no fix at the moment, but owners will be notified when a remedy is available.
The Toyota Grand Highlander and Lexus TX have been a hit with consumers, but they’re the subject of a massive recall. A total of 145,254 vehicles are impacted as they have a driver’s side curtain airbag that may improperly deploy.
According to the safety recall report, the front portion of the airbag may not unroll as intended and may “move outside of the driver’s window” if it happens to be lowered at the time of an accident. If this occurs, the risk of injury could be increased. That isn’t the only issue as the government noted the vehicles “may not meet certain ejection headform displacement requirements.”
Review: The 2024 Toyota Grand Highlander Is A Jack Of All Trades, Master Of Some
Unfortunately, there’s no fix at the moment. However, Toyota and Lexus will begin notifying owners about the issue in August and will send out a second letter once a remedy is available.
The recall impacts the 2024 Grand Highlander and Grand Highlander Hybrid as well as the Lexus TX and TX Hybrid. The standard Highlander is unaffected as it has a “different design and … different surrounding structures.”
The Grand Highlander starts at $43,320 and has quickly become one of Toyota’s best-selling crossovers in America. The company sold 25,136 units in the first quarter, which meant it trailed the standard Highlander by 6,897 units.
Over at Lexus, the TX racked up 9,956 sales in the first quarter. That made it their third best-selling vehicle as it finished behind the RX (26,473) and NX (17,119).
