• Volvo is ending S60 production at its plant in South Carolina.
  • The model will continue to be made in China for the domestic market as well as Australia.
  • The V60 is, so far, unaffected and is still available in America.

Volvo S60 sales soared 281% in the United States last month, but that wasn’t enough to save the sedan. Quite the opposite as the automaker is ending S60 production in South Carolina later this month.

The news first surfaced on Instagram and was confirmed by Volvo’s Russell Datz. He told Road & Track, “After five years Volvo Cars is ending production of the S60 sedan in Ridgeville, South Carolina at the end of June 2024 for the U.S. and some other markets to focus on the all-new EX90.”

We reached out for additional information and the automaker told us the S60 isn’t entirely dead as production continues in Daqing, China. The plant builds the sedan for the Chinese and Australian markets.

We also asked about the fate of the V60 and were told that model is “still currently available.” As for the future of the S60, the automaker isn’t saying much aside from the usual “we cannot comment on future products or plans.”

Previous reports have suggested the company is working on electric S60 and S90 successors. We haven’t heard much about the former, but the S90 successor is expected to be called the ES90 and a pre-production prototype reportedly rolled off the assembly line in China last December.

The model is expected to ride on the SPA2 platform and is rumored to have a 111 kWh battery pack like the EX90. A debut could occur later this year, but Volvo has been tight-lipped about the EV.

Getting back to the S60, Volvo sold 10,357 units in the United States last year. That was up from 6,150 units in 2022 and roughly on par with the 10,550 sold in 2021.

Those are modest numbers and the S60 finished 2023 as Volvo’s fourth best-selling vehicle in the United States. The three most popular models were crossovers and the XC90 came out on top with 39,920 sales.

The S60’s death follows news that the EX90 went into production in South Carolina earlier this month. The plant opened in the summer of 2018 and has the capacity to build up to 150,000 vehicles annually.
