Chinese customers have access to the widest range of VW SUVs in the world, which keeps expanding with the addition of new models. The latest example is the Tharu XR, a new SUV by the SAIC Volkswagen joint venture, set to bridge the gap between the slightly smaller T-Cross and the larger Tharu.
Following the initial announcement by China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, SAIC Volkswagen released official photos and information about the Tharu XR, ahead of its market launch in China.

The exterior design is quite familiar, as Volkswagen designers didn’t try to hide the close ties between the Tharu XR and other SUVs. The sculpted character line on the profile is shared with the VW T-Cross, as well as with the VW Taigun and Skoda Kushaq twins from India.
What distinguishes the Tharu XR from the aforementioned models is the completely redesigned face adopting styling cues from the larger Tiguan L Pro, like the sharp LEDs and the large bumper intakes. The tail also appears to be longer, with unique taillights boasting a smoked finish. The company will offer two different configurations, with either black or chrome accents around the bodywork.
The profile of the VW Tharu XR (above) looks very similar to the Indian-spec VW Taigun (below).
The VW Tharu XR measures 4,355 mm (171.5 inches) long, 1,762 mm (69.4 inches) wide, and 1,605 mm (63.2 inches) tall. The wheelbase of 2,651 mm (104.4 inches) is shared with the Chinese-spec T-Cross, and the Indian-spec Taigun, which ride on the same MQB A0 underpinnings.
Note that the regular VW Tharu, which is also locally manufactured by SAIC, is 103 mm (4.1 inches) longer than the Tharu XR, and has an extra 29 mm (1.1 inches) between the axles.

Under the hood, the VW Tharu XR will offer the choice between two gasoline powertrains with a displacement of 1.5 liters. The more potent turbocharged version is good for 158 hp (118 kW / 160 PS) and 250 Nm (184 lb-ft) of torque, sending power to the front axle, most likely through a DSG automatic transmission.
SAIC Volkswagen will announce more details about the Tharu XR in the near future. When it lands in China, the new model is expected to be priced above the ¥115,900 ($15,971) starting price of the T-Cross, and below the ¥158,600 ($21,855) of the Tharu.
