• The 2025 BMW 2-Series Gran Coupe has been uncovered from patent drawings and spy shots.
  • Styling and interior updates will be heavily inspired by the 1-Series hatchback.
  • Like the 1-Series, it will ride on an updated version of the existing platform.

Despite BMW calling the new 1-Series the fourth generation of the hatchback, it’s actually a heavily updated version of its predecessor. The mechanically-related BMW 2-Series Gran Coupe will soon follow the same recipe, in a quest to improve its appeal against the rival Mercedes-Benz CLA.

Our exclusive renderings depict the M Sport version of the 2025 BMW 2-Series Gran Coupe, borrowing styling cues from the hatchback.

The unofficial illustrations are based on patent drawings, discovered by our colleagues at Autoweek. The patents show the compact sedan from all angles, revealing most major styling upgrades over its predecessor.

Like the new 1-Series, the 2025 BMW 2-Series Gran Coupe will retain the same proportions, but most of the sheet metal will be redesigned. Unlike the outgoing model and its unique front-end treatment, the new model appears to adopt the face of the 1-Series, including the grille, headlights, and bumper. The rear end will be updated with sharper LED taillights inspired by the X2 and a sportier bumper.

Interestingly, the M Sport trims of the 2-Series Gran Coupe are differentiated from the standard model not only from the more aggressive bumpers but also the door handles. These look similar to newer BMWs like the mechanically-related X2, making us wonder why the automaker didn’t apply them to all trims of the 2-Series Gran Coupe.

Another small but important update is the slightly tweaked line on the C-pillar, trying to bring back BMW‘s iconic “Hofmeister kink”.

Given the exterior changes, it will be no surprise that the interior will most likely mirror the updates introduced by the new BMW 1-Series hatchback. The highlight will be the new curved panel, housing a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster and a 10.7-inch infotainment touchscreen display. The redesigned center console will likely have far fewer buttons than before, with details like the new climate vents and the metal accents accentuating the premium appearance.

Updated Underpinnings

The BMW 2-Series Gran Coupe will ride on an updated version of the existing FWD architecture, also used by the 1-Series, X1, X2, and several Mini models. Depending on the market, powertrain options will likely include diesel, gasoline, and mild-hybrid engines, paired exclusively to a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission.

The range will be crowned by the M235 xDrive model, which will drop the i from its name. As in the M135 xDrive, power will come from a turbocharged 2.0-liter engine producing up to 312 hp (233 kW / 317 PS) and 295 lb-ft (400 Nm) of torque.

BMW has yet to set a date for the debut of the updated 2-Series Gran Coupe. Still, based on the fact that our spy photographers have been spotting camouflaged prototypes for more than a year, we expect the new model to arrive within 2024.
