The 2028 Jeep Gladiator, alongside its Wrangler sibling, is set to undergo a controversial change in direction with battery-electric and range-extender (REx) powertrains. Recent documents from the United Auto Workers (UAW) agreement with Jeep’s parent company, Stellantis, unintentionally confirmed the move, which outlined the future of several US-built models.

Rugged Design
For 2028, the Gladiator EV (and the Wrangler it’s based on) will build on the brand’s legendary heritage while incorporating modern design elements to enhance its appeal.
Expect a blend of classic Wrangler aesthetics with futuristic touches like aerodynamic enhancements and advanced lighting technology. Our design proposal features a reimagined seven-slot grille, a Rivian-esque lightbar, and round Matrix LED headlights alongside an angular lower bumper with improved approach angles. The fold-out windscreen and hood latches have been eliminated for a sleeker look.
The side profile is even more radical with a streamlined glasshouse, two-tone roof (featuring two LiDAR units), a chiselled shoulder line and a longer bed with an angled space behind the cab for improved packaging. Out back, a damped tailgate with full-width OLED taillamps and stamped ‘Jeep’ lettering cement the rugged look.
Tougher Fundamentals
The next Gladiator and J70-generation Wrangler are expected to sit on the ultra-strong STLA Frame platform, which promises improved structural rigidity and the ability to accommodate heavy batteries required for long-distance electric travel.

This architecture underpins the 2025 Ram 1500 REV, which is ideal for the Wrangler’s renowned off-road capabilities. It ensures that the vehicle remains a formidable force on rugged terrains.
Amped Aspirations
Jeep will reportedly offer two electric powertrain options: a fully electric variant and a range extender. The pure EV will likely boast a sizeable battery pack (up to 229kWh), with an estimated range of 350 to 500 miles (560-800 km) on a single charge. Power-wise, it could draw inspiration from the Magneto 3.0 concept, which has an impressive 641bhp and 900lb-ft of torque.
The Range Electric Paradigm Breaker (REPB) variant will feature a small combustion engine acting as a generator to extend the vehicle’s range, mitigating anxiety for long-distance travelers and off-road enthusiasts worried about EV charger availability.
Rivals and Reveal
The Gladiator’s primary rivals include Rivian’s R1T, the Fisker Alaska (if the company stays afloat), and possibly certain trims of bigger EV trucks, such as the Ford F-150 Lightning, Tesla Cybertruck, and Chevrolet Silverado EV.
An official reveal is anticipated for late 2027, and production at the Stellantis factory in Toledo, Ohio, will start in early 2028.
