• Sales of Toyota’s hybrid vehicles jumped a considerable 66% in the first half of the year.
  • Toyota and Lexus hold almost a 60% share of the U.S. hybrid vehicle market.

All major Toyota models sold in the U.S. will be offered as hybrids by 2030 as the carmaker looks to further lock down the market.

Toyota and Lexus currently hold almost a 60% share of the U.S. hybrid vehicle market and with demand for EVs slipping through the first half of 2024, Toyota is planning additional investment into hybrids. Sales of its hybrid vehicles jumped a considerable 66% in the January-June period to 410,000 units, thanks in no small part to the fact that the new Camry is sold exclusively as a hybrid.

Toyota Motor North America regional environmental sustainability director Kevin Butt said to Nikkei Asia that the brand’s hybrid range will grow over the coming years. He didn’t specify which of its ‘key models’ will get hybrid powertrains by 2030.

Between January and June, Toyota had a 15% share of the total passenger car market in North America and hybrids accounted for 33% of the firm’s total sales. By 2030, it wants roughly 80% of its North American sales to be for electrified vehicles, including EVs. With a potential Trump presidency on the horizon, it’s understandable why Toyota wants to double down on hybrids.

If Donald Trump does return to the Oval Office for a second term, he is expected to cut EV mandates and in the past, has vehemently opposed electric vehicles. In September 2023, he described EVs as a hoax and claimed the U.S. auto industry could “cease to exist” if Chinese carmakers have their way.

The report notes that Trump has become allies with Elon Musk in recent months, one of the most outspoken proponents of EVs on the planet. Musk endorsed Trump earlier this month and is reportedly planning to donate $45 million a month to a pro-Trump organization. If Trump does become President, there’s no doubt that Musk will try to get him on his side and change his views on EVs.
