• The Audi A5 model family will debut on July 16 to replace the A4.
  • Fully electric A6 e-tron to follow in late July, with Sportback and Avant models available from launch.
  • The third-generation Audi Q5 SUV will arrive this fall.

Audi published the first official teaser of the upcoming A5, ahead of its world premiere on July 16. The new A5 will replace the A4 and will be offered in Sportback and Avant forms. The automaker also announced that the fully electric A6 e-tron will debut in late July, followed by the new generation of the Audi Q5 this fall.

Audi CEO Gernot Döllner confirmed the news, saying: “In just a few days, we will introduce the next model family: the Audi A5. The Audi A6 e-tron will follow in late July, and the new Audi Q5 in fall.”

The announcement was accompanied by a single sketch, showing the rear end of the Audi A5 Avant. The model features full-width taillights, likely incorporating Audi’s latest OLED technology. Furthermore, the inclined rear glass and the pronounced spoiler give it a sportier stance compared to the outgoing A4 Avant.

Lightly camouflaged prototypes of the Audi A5 have been spotted several times by our spy photographers, revealing a more sculpted bodywork and aggressive LED headlights flanking a slimmer grille. Besides the standard models, we have also seen prototypes of the hotter S5 Sportback and RS5 Avant models, the latter distinguished by a wide bodykit.

Speaking about the new A5 family, Döllner said it will mark “the beginning of the next generation of combustion engines, which will be more efficient thanks to partially electric driving.” Those comments hint at a range of mild-hybrid and plug-in hybrid powertrains, with the latter expected to offer more than 100 km (62 miles) of zero-emission range. The MLB-based Audi A5 won’t get a fully electric version, as this is reserved for a similarly-sized A4, which is set to arrive further into the future.

Audi A6 e-tron and new Q5 Coming Soon

The CEO also commented on the upcoming A6 e-tron, saying it will be the first electric Audi available at launch in Sportback and Avant bodystyles, featuring “striking design” and offering “outstanding performance, efficiency, and range”.

Finally, the third generation of the Q5 that will arrive this fall will begin the “rejuvenation” of Audi’s SUV portfolio with combustion and partially electrified powertrains.

The recently unveiled Q6 e-tron and the upcoming A5, A6 e-tron, and Q5 are only a few of the many surprises that Audi has in store. The company confirmed that over 20 new model launches are scheduled for 2024 and 2025, including more than 10 EVs.

Döllner said: “Over the coming years, we will expand our range of electric models step by step. At the same time, we will rejuvenate our portfolio of models with combustion engines. This will give us a robust and flexible position as we transition to an all-electric portfolio.”
