Genesis has been raising our pulses recently with the teased introduction of its Magma performance sub-brand, but that’s not all the company has been working on. It’s also in the process of updating its existing luxury-focused lineup, including the GV70 Electrified seen here.

Or not seen here, because, as per usual for any Hyundai Group prototype, this test car is hiding under a mountain of black nylon disguise, with various foam blocks added underneath to try to keep its secrets intact until launch time.

Which is kind of pointless, because we already know 95 percent of what’s hiding under the camo. Genesis itself let us know back in April when it unveiled the facelifted version of the combustion GV70.

That car gained some subtle exterior updates including, at the front, a new set of headlights that frame a modified grille, and a reshaped bumper with larger air intakes. Rear styling tweaks are less obvious, but the turn signals are now integrated into the taillights and the Genesis design team has come up with some new alloy wheels.

But the Electrified EV will get a different grille again, one that’s blanked-off because it doesn’t have the ICE versions’ cooling requirements, though the section poking out of the disguise on this prototype shows it’ll still display a Genesis cross-hatch design.

The biggest changes coming to the Electrified take place inside the cabin, where, judging by what we’ve seen on the ICE model, Genesis has fitted a 27-inch combined gauge cluster and infotainment screen that stretches almost two-thirds of the way across the car.

Touch-sensitive buttons on the console control the climate settings and there’s a new steering wheel – flat-bottomed on cars with the Sport package, which also get a rear diffuser, dark chrome exhaust tips, new 21-inch wheels and a unique grille pattern. Genesis doesn’t currently offer a Sport trim on the GV70 Electrified in the US, but given the brand’s new focus on performance, we guess that could change.

Hopefully Genesis will also make some changes under the hood to improve the current EV’s poor driving range. The EPA rates the 483 hp (490 PS) bi-motor GV70 at just 236 miles (380 km), but improving on that by any significant amount will mean upgrading the 77.4 kWh battery for something bigger. The facelifted G80 Electrified sedan recently received a battery boost from 87.2 to 95.4 kWh, so there is hope.

Though Genesis unveiled the facelifted GV70 in April and put it on sale in Korea the following month, the revised combustion crossover won’t appear in the US until 2025 as a MY26. We suspect the EV will get its global debut in the next couple of months and will arrive in North America around the same time as the ICE car.
