Imagine telling someone ten years ago that a Hyundai would be not just as quick as a BMW M4 but that it would be even quicker. Now, put on top of that the Hyundai in question would be an electric vehicle. It sounds wild but that’s the world we’re living in.

The BMW here is a 2024 M4 Competition, complete with a twin-turbocharged inline-six making 503 hp (374 kW). It weighs 3,786 pounds (1,717 kg) and costs $111,045. On the other hand, the Hyundai Ioniq 5 N makes 641 hp (477 kW) but tips the scales at 4,871 pounds (2209 kg). Of course, it’ll only set you back $67,685 which means you could afford another car and still spend less than the BMW buyer.

Either way, this U-Drag Race is exactly what it sounds like. The cars start from a dig, race down one-quarter of a mile, make a U-turn, and then race back to the start line. It tests acceleration, lateral grip, and braking, all in one convenient package.

In race one, the EV rockets off to a large lead but the BMW reels it in during the braking zone. The Bavarian sports car actually exits the turn first too but the Hyundai is simply too powerful. It manages to sneak back into first place just before the finish line.

Race two goes largely the same way at the beginning but this time, the M4 Comp doesn’t gain anywhere near as much ground in the braking zone. Instead, the Ioniq 5 N takes a lead early and keeps it the entire way through the race. Let this be a clear indication of the times.

Sure, the M4 is probably more emotionally fulfilling but those who actually cherish victory and outright speed above all else will have to shift their viewpoint. Gone are the days of a decade ago when a Hyundai was a slow commuter car. Now, they’re still a commuter car but they’re lightning quick.
