Hyundai’s ICE-powered N models, as well as the Genesis G70, are among the brand’s most compelling performance vehicles. They all make solid power, but a new recall notice from the NHTSA reveals that they could run too rich and potentially lose performance. The issue is also said to increase the risk of a crash.
The Korean carmaker has revealed that N models equipped with its 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder have a fuel control valve in the high-pressure fuel pump that may allow excess fuel to enter the pump because of the gradual wear of the FCV plunger. This could cause the engine to run too rich, resulting in a loss of power.

The same issue impacts select Genesis G70 models fitted with the entry-level 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder. Owners of impacted vehicles may be alerted to a potential issue with a warning light, a lack of power, a rough idle, and an engine misfire.
A total of 54,647 vehicles in the U.S. are involved in the recall. Impacted 2019-2023 Genesis G70 models were built between May 2, 2018, and October 16, 2023, while the recall also involves 2019-2022 Veloster Ns manufactured from September 6, 2018, to August 18, 2022.
Hyundai is also recalling 2022-2023 Elantra Ns built from September 15, 2021, to November 23, 2023, as well as 2022-2023 Kona N models assembled from October 5, 2021, to April 25, 2023.
In July last year, Hyundai became aware of an emerging issue in foreign markets and started to investigate its impact on North American vehicles in September. It proceeded to run tests on sample fuel pumps, and in some of them, it was able to replicate the fault.
The brand has received 2,460 incident reports in the U.S. between May 10, 2019, and June 17, 2024, related to the issue but is unaware of any crashes, fires, or injuries in the U.S. or Canada.
Those who own an impacted model will be instructed to bring it to a Hyundai dealer or Genesis retailer for the engine software to be updated. If the vehicle also suffers from fuel pump issues, dealers will replace the pump free of charge.
