• A prototype of the Mercedes-Maybach SL has been spied testing out in the open.
  • The most luxurious version of the SL was announced two years ago with a teaser.
  • It is expected to offer a powerful AMG-derived plug-in hybrid powertrain.

Update 7/10: Our story on the upcoming Mercedes-Maybach SL has been bolstered by new spy shots featuring a second red prototype, sporting distinctive Maybach wheels

The latest generation of the Mercedes-AMG SL debuted in 2021 as the roadster counterpart to the AMG GT sportscar, but its range continues to expand. After serving as the base for the the exotic AMG Mythos speedster, the SL is now poised to receive the Maybach treatment for those seeking an elevated level of luxury.

The Mercedes-Maybach SL appeared in an official teaser in May 2022, showing a portion of its front end. More than two years later, our spy photographers caught what appears to be the first lightly camouflaged prototype during hot weather testing in Europe.

This tester mirrors the standard SL’s bodywork, except for the concealed front end, which presumably hides Maybach’s design tweaks. An official Mercedes teaser hinted at these changes, including a gleaming grille, a Maybach logo adorning the hood, and the classic Mercedes ornament.

The prototype features dual trapezoidal exhaust pipes, a signature of Maybach models. This design element cleverly distinguishes the Maybach SL from its standard counterpart. While the four-cylinder SL boasts quad circular tailpipes, and V8 models (including the E Performance hybrid) sport a quartet of trapezoidal pipes, the Maybach takes a unique approach.

Expect further differentiation through bespoke alloy wheels and a more generously chromed exterior.

The most significant changes will occur inside the cabin, where Maybach will offer more exquisite materials and a higher degree of personalization. This will include a wider variety of colors than those available through the Mercedes Manufaktur label, justifying the premium price tag of the Maybach-branded SL. The pictured tester features red interior upholstery that matches the color of the retractable roof.

At the moment, we can’t be certain about what lies under the hood of the Mercedes-Maybach SL. However, it’s likely that the model will inherit the most powerful powertrain options from the Mercedes-AMG SL.

As for the possibility of a 12-cylinder engine, this seems unlikely, especially since the rival Bentley Continental GTC Speed recently transitioned to an electrified V8 setup. Bear in mind that the flagship Mercedes-AMG S63 S E Performance PHEV produces a combined 805 hp (600 kW / 816 PS) and 1,047 lb-ft (1,420 Nm) of torque, which should be more than sufficient for a luxury roadster.

While we don’t have a debut date for the Mercedes-Maybach SL, we wouldn’t be surprised if it arrives at showrooms sometime next year. In the meantime, you can check out our speculative renderings based on earlier teasers.

Note: These independent renderings are off-the-record and unrelated to Mercedes-Maybach.
