• MG announced that the second-generation HS will debut at Goodwood FOS.
  • The compact SUV appears to be closely related to China’s Roewe RX5.
  • The MG HS is expected to be available in petrol, PHEV, and EV versions.

MG is ready to unveil a new HS at this year’s Goodwood Festival of Speed. The SAIC-owned brand published a video teaser, showing the sharp lines of the upcoming SUV.

The current MG HS debuted in 2018 and received a facelift in 2020. Four years later, it is time for a clean-sheet design to better compete against newer rivals in the competitive compact SUV (C-SUV) segment.

Despite the darkness of the teaser trying to hide the exterior design, we already know how it looks thanks to patent drawings. The greenhouse and the sheet metal on the profile appear to be largely carried over from third-gen Roewe RX5, and even the alloy wheels look identical. This all but confirms earlier reports about the MG HS being a sister model to the Chinese SUV.

To set the MG apart from its Roewe twin, SAIC gave it a specific face with a different grille and sportier bumper intakes. The aggressive headlights appear to have unique graphics, although the outer shape could be the same. Finally, the rear end looks identical, setting aside the simpler spoiler and a few details on the tailgate.

The new MG HS is expected to offer the choice between petrol, plug-in hybrid, and fully electric powertrain options, bringing improved efficiency compared to its predecessor. As reported by Autocar, the PHEV targets a segment-leading EV-only range, adding another selling point next to the value-for-money pricing.

Rivals of the MG HS include the likes of the VW Tiguan, Kia Sportage, Hyundai Tucson, Peugeot 3008, and Ford Kuga. We will learn everything about the new generation of the compact SUV on July 11 at Goodwood. Until then, check out the teaser video below.
