• The Tata Curvv enters production two years after the concept’s debut.
  • The budget SUV Coupe is available in India with ICE and EV powertrains.
  • The fully electric Tata Curvv.EV is priced from Rs 17.49 lakh ($20,900).

Update: This story has been revised with fresh details following the Curvv’s official launch on August 7.

Tata Motors has pulled the wraps off the production-ready Curvv. Built on the new ATLAS platform, the coupe-SUV will offer a range of powertrain options, including gasoline, diesel, and fully electric.

The Curvv concept was introduced in EV form in April 2022, with the ICE-powered equivalent following in January 2023. The production versions look very similar, with only a few toned-down features. The highlight is the sloping roofline, making it look like a cut-price version of the BMW X2.

The production-spec Tata Curvv has traded some of its concept car flair for practicality. Gone are the dramatic design cues, replaced by more conventional elements like traditional mirrors and a less aggressive stance. While the sloping roofline remains, the overall look is now more in line with Tata’s existing lineup.

The main differentiation point between the EV and ICE models is the grille-less look, bumper-mounted charging port, and EV badges for the former, as the sheet metal on the profile and tail appears to be identical. The electric version also gets a different set of alloy wheels for better aerodynamics.

The cabin feels like a familiar space, borrowing heavily from the Nexon and Nexon EV, with minor changes to the trim and a steering wheel sourced from the larger Harrier and Safari SUV. Touch-sensitive controls and a smattering of tech features like a panoramic sunroof and 360-degree camera aim to elevate the premium quotient, but the cabin’s core character remains rooted in its more affordable siblings.

New ATLAS Underpinnings

The Tata Curvv is the first production model riding on the Indian brand’s new Adaptive Tech Forward Lifestyle Architecture (ATLAS), which is set to underpin a number of future models. The platform is compatible with both ICE and EV, allowing the SUV to be offered with a variety of powertrain options.

The ICE-powered version is available with two kinds of turbo 1.2-liter three-cylinder engines producing up to 125 hp (93 kW / 127 PS), and a 1.5-liter diesel generating 118 hp (88 kW / 120 PS). Power is transmitted to the front wheels, via a six-speed manual, or a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic.

The fully electric Curvv is offered in two guises. The entry-level model is fitted with a 45 kWh battery pack and a single electric motor producing 150 hp (112 kW / 152 PS). The flagship EV gets a larger 55 kWh battery, and a more potent electric motor with 165 hp (123 kW / 167 PS). Tata claims that real-world range figures will be around 330-350 km (205-218 miles) for the smaller battery, and between 400-425 km (249-264 miles) for the larger unit.

Pricing and Rivals

Pricing for the Tata Curv.EV in India starts from Rs 17.49 lakh (equal to around $20,900 at current exchange rates) and tops out at Rs 21.99 lakh ($26,200) depending on the trim and battery capacity. The company didn’t announce the prices of the ICE-powered Tata Curvv lineup, that will follow on September 2.

The only direct rival of the Tata Curvv in the affordable coupe SUV segment is the upcoming Citroen Basalt. However, the model will also compete with conventional SUV offerings, like the Suzuki Grand Vitara, Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder, Hyundai Creta, Kia Seltos, Honda Elevate, and more.
