• BMW previewed the next 2-Series racer, continuing the M235i, M240i, and M2 CS Racing legacy.
  • The new model boasts aero and weight-saving enhancements for optimal race performance.
  • BMW has not confirmed the debut date for the new racer, promising details “at a later date.”

The second-generation BMW 2-Series is going racing and BMW M Motorsport has previewed what it refers to as its latest “entry-level car.” It will follow in the footsteps of other 2-Series racing cars produced over the past decade, including the M235i Racing, the M240i Racing, and the M2 CS Racing.

BMW has published five photos of the racing model but has not yet confirmed any details about it. It appears to be based on the M2, rather than a lesser 2-Series variant like the 220i, 230i, or M240i, and has clearly undergone some modifications to get it ready for the racetrack.

Visible at the front of the racing model is a more pronounced splitter as well as a bright red tow strap. BMW has bathed the entire fascia in black and white camouflage, but most parts, including the kidney grilles and air intakes, look the same as the road-going M2. More changes are visible on the sides as the race car sits lower, has custom wheels, and features sticky Goodyear tires.

There’s plenty to like about the rear of the motorsports-prepped 2 Series. It includes a large lip spoiler that’s much more aggressive than the small lip of the regular M2. A peek through the windows reveals the car has a full roll cage and racing seats.

BMW Teases New M2-Based Race Car

“Proximity to our customers is one of the maxims we pursue at BMW M Motorsport,” the head of customer racing at BMW M Motorsport, Björn Lellmann, said when describing the race offering.

“From our point of view, this also includes offering a car for grassroots racing that teams and newcomers to racing can afford and that at the same time offers them BMW M Motorsport technology at the highest level. Accordingly, we are delighted to be able to announce a successor model to the BMW M235i Racing, BMW M240i Racing, and BMW M2 CS Racing at this point. Our engineers are already working intensively at this early stage of development to optimally prepare the car for customer use,” he added,

BMW M Motorsport has yet to confirm when the 2 Series model will premiere, stating only that it “will be announced at a later date.”
