• For the first time ever, BMW led Europe’s EV sales chart in July 2024, surpassing Tesla.
  • European car sales grew 2% in July, but BEV registrations fell 6% to 139,300.
  • The Dacia Sandero topped overall sales, while VW was the leading brand.

In a surprising turn, BMW has claimed the top spot on Europe’s electric vehicle sales chart for July 2024. The German automaker managed to outsell Tesla by a narrow margin, delivering 14,869 BEVs during the month. This marks a significant 35 percent year-on-year increase for BMW and their first-ever lead over Tesla in the European EV market.

Despite losing the top sales spot, Tesla retained the crown for best-selling EV, with 9,544 registrations of the Model Y. The all-new Volvo EX30 secured the second spot, while the VW ID.4 and Tesla Model 3 rounded out the top three in Europe’s EV rankings.

BMW claimed the sixth and seventh positions in July’s BEV model rankings with the iX1 SUV and the recently facelifted i4 Gran Coupe. Other electric models from BMW also bolstered its performance, surpassing rival offerings from Audi and Mercedes.

According to date provided by JATO Dynamics, Europe saw 1.03 million vehicle sales in July 2024, marking a 2 percent rise from the previous year. However, BEV sales dropped by 6 percent, with 139,300 registrations and a reduced market share of 13.5 percent.

Felipe Munoz, Global Analyst at JATO Dynamics, commented, “The lack of clarity around the incentives for – and future of – EVs continues to present a barrier to consumers considering an EV. These factors, alongside the low residual value of EVs contributed to the decline seen in July.”

The Dacia Sandero remains the top-selling car overall

In other news, the ICE-powered Dacia Sandero held its ground as Europe’s best-selling car, with 22,400 units sold in July, a 34 percent increase. It was followed by the VW T-Roc and Toyota Yaris Cross subcompact SUVs, while the Dacia Duster claimed fourth place.

In terms of brand sales, Volkswagen was the overall market leader with 108,959 registrations, followed by Toyota (75,338 units) and BMW (64,012 units).

Unsurprisingly, the popularity of SUVs keeps rising. The segment reached a record 54 percent of Europe’s total vehicle registrations in July 2024, with five of the top ten best-selling models being SUVs.
