- The California Highway Patrol is preparing to hand out speeding tickets in Monterey.
- The division claims it’s there to provide the highest level of safety, service, and security.
- The operation began yesterday, August 14, and will continue throughout the week.
Monterey Car Week is finally here and with it, countless car enthusiasts flock to the area. All of them need to be on the lookout for the police though. Beginning today, the California Highway Patrol is conducting a maximum enforcement period.
That means that the entire division will be on high alert to catch speeders and those who drive dangerously or recklessly in the area. According to the CHP, speeding is the leading contributor to crashes in California.

“Speeding isn’t just breaking the law – it’s putting lives at risk. Every additional mile per hour reduces a driver’s reaction time and increases the severity of a crash,” said Coastal Division Commander, Chief LD Maples. Undoubtedly, several of the performance cars that will show up are capable of exceeding legal speed limits in just a few seconds.
Did something significant or dangerous happen last year or in years previous to cause this new crackdown? According to CHP, the answer is no. “No major incident happened last year” to trigger the offensive, said Officer Jordan Richards with the CHP Coastal Division to the Santa Barbara Independent. “It’s more what we’ve seen in all years and witnessed during Car Week that increasingly has grown.”
“During the maximum enforcement period, quite a few more officers will be out there throughout the Coastal Division,” Richards continued. “Officers will be standing by along the freeway, as well as helicopters and aircraft to assist if a particular vehicle comes along. Typically, everybody pulls over… They probably know that a speeding ticket is a speeding ticket, but to run and get caught, well, that’s potential jail time.”
No doubt, the CHP understands that this is a prime week to catch more speeders and hand out more tickets. If you happen to be in the area consider this your warning. If anything, it’s nice that the police are openly admitting that this whole operation is taking place.
