- The next-generation Audi Q5 will be joined by its sportier sibling, the Q5 Sportback
- This coupe-SUV sports a distinct roofline and a redesigned rear end for added flair.
- The powertrain lineup is expected to include mild-hybrid and plug-in hybrid options.
Following numerous spy shots of the new Audi Q5, our photographers have now captured the prototype of the upcoming Q5 Sportback. This coupe-SUV variant of the popular model will remain in Audi’s ICE lineup, featuring the latest advancements in design, technology, and electrification.
The camouflaged Q5 Sportback prototype shares its front-end design with earlier Q5 models, featuring aggressive LED headlights, a honeycomb grille, and sporty bumper intakes. However, it stands out with its sloping roofline and redesigned rear section. Those small wheels and basic taillights hint at a lower-spec model.

Just like its predecessor, the new Q5 Sportback features a sharply inclined rear glass covered by a roof spoiler. The new taillights are mounted higher than before and appear connected above the license plate. The tailpipes will help buyers distinguish the ICE-powered Q5 Sportback from the fully electric Q6 e-tron Sportback, which is also expected to debut soon.
The interior will be shared between the Q5 and the Q5 Sportback, featuring Audi’s latest digital cockpit. This setup includes an 11.9-inch digital instrument cluster, a 14.5-inch infotainment display, and an optional 10.9-inch passenger screen. Rear headroom in the Q5 Sportback will likely be slightly reduced compared to the taller Q5, owing to its more aerodynamic design.

Both the Audi Q5 and Q5 Sportback will ride on the new PPC (Premium Platform Combustion) architecture, which is not a clean-sheet design but rather an updated version of the MLB Evo (Modular Longitudinal Matrix). The same platform also underpins the new Audi A5 Sedan and Avant, giving us an idea about the potential powertrain lineup of the Q5.
Judging by the charging port, the prototype likely features a plug-in hybrid setup. It will be accompanied by mildly electrified versions of the 2.0-liter turbocharged gasoline four-cylinder and, for European markets, the 2.0-liter turbo diesel engines, all incorporating Audi’s latest 48V MHEV Plus system. The transmission will be a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic, with all-wheel drive likely being standard in the States.
The performance-focused SQ5 is expected to feature the mild-hybrid 3.0-liter V6 TFSI from the S5 with around 360 horsepower, coupled with a sportier body kit and a more responsive chassis.
Audi has officially confirmed that the new generation Q5 will debut this fall. With the Q5 Sportback prototype already looking production-ready, it’s likely the sleeker variant will be unveiled around the same time or shortly thereafter. We expect the automaker to announce more details soon.
