• Tesla is about to begin selling a new integrated Cybertruck LED light bar. 
  • Technicians are allowed to install the bar, but they’re not allowed to plug it in. 
  • In some US states, laws mandate drivers to cover their light bars on public roads.

Tesla is no stranger to selling accessories and the Cybertruck is maybe its best candidate for them. Fans noticed when the truck entered production that it was missing its signature LED lightbar. Now, the unit is about to start shipping to customers but they’ll have to plug it in themselves. 

LED lightbars are almost as much about how they look when off as how well they light up the night. The Cybertruck’s OEM lightbar integrates at the apex of its roof and matches the design of the main DRL lightbar. Owners received an email in July that the light bars were finally shipping out but there’s a catch.

A Tesla technician will do the work of installing the bar but they’ll stop short of making it functional. In fact, the Cybertruck Service Manual specifically tells technicians not to plug it in and to install a layer of blackout film on the lens itself. That’s because of federal safety standards that make the lightbar illegal to use on public roadways. 

Owners will need to do the final bits of installation, plugging the bar in and removing the film, if they want the bar to be functional. That task doesn’t appear as though it’ll be all that tough since the Tesla tech will do everything just short of those two actions. The question is how many owners will use these bars responsibly?

Tesla is no stranger to just barely playing on the right side of the law when it comes to federal safety standards. The side mirrors of the Cybertruck are also removable. That’s because several owners like the look of the truck without them and they’re somewhat redundant thanks to video feeds of each side of the truck in the cabin. 

Now that this accessory is making its way to customers, Tesla could even begin to sell another one, a cover that will actually sit on the bar itself. It would go well with all of the other bits and pieces Tesla sells for this truck.
