- The recall impacts the BMW i4 eDrive40, i4 xDrive40, and i4 M50.
- The fault could cause excess chassis deformation in the event of a crash.
- Owners of affected models will be notified of the recall by October 7.
An issue with the chassis of certain BMW i4 models shipped and delivered in the United States has prompted a recall of 1,150 vehicles. The issuance of this recall comes just a few months after a separate recall impacted i4 and i5 models related to their batteries.
In the case of this recall, BMW has determined that the left-side longitudinal beam of the i4’s chassis may not have been produced according to specifications. As such, the beam may contain cracks near the area of a rivet flange used to support the rear wheel arch, thus impacting the structural integrity of the chassis.

BMW says excess deformation could occur in a crash around the second row of seats and the high-voltage battery, increasing the risk of injury and a fire. The recall impacts 2024 BMW i4 eDrive40, i4 xDrive40, and i4 M50 models that were manufactured from March 7, 2024, to April 25, 2024.
A recall notice reveals that BMW initially contained all affected vehicles for the U.S. market and repaired them before wholesale distribution across the country. However, in July, it was determined that some additional i4s had been built outside the previously identified suspect range with the same fault. There have been no reports of warranty claims, customer complaints, or field reports, nor is BMW aware of any accidents or injuries caused by the dodgy beam.
Owners will be notified by first class mail of the recall by October 7, 2024, and instructed to take their EV to a local BMW dealer where the left-side longitudinal beam will be inspected and, if necessary, replaced. There’s no mention of how long any necessary repairs will take.
