• Toyota is developing new 1.5-liter and 2.0-liter gasoline engines for future models.
  • The turbocharged 2.0L is rumored to produce 395 hp, with up to 592 hp in racing form.
  • This engine seems like the perfect fit for a potential return of the Celica and MR2.

Toyota remains one of the few automakers steadfast in its belief in the potential of internal combustion engines, prioritizing hybrids over full EVs. Rumors from Japan suggest Toyota’s turbocharged 2.0-liter engine, currently in development, could deliver up to 592 hp (441 kW / 600 PS) in its top-spec racing form—without any electrification assistance.

Beyond the top-end variant, a high-performance road version is expected to deliver 395 hp (294 kW / 400 PS) and 550 Nm (406 lb-ft) of torque. A less powerful variant is also reportedly in the works, targeting 296 hp (221 kW / 300 PS) and 400 Nm (295 lb-ft) of torque.

Citing inside sources, Best Car reports that the racing version of the 2.0-liter unit could produce as much as 592 hp (441 kW / 600 PS), which translates to over 300 PS per liter. At the moment, it is not clear which race cars or rally cars from Toyota Gazoo Racing could use this powertrain, but we can speculate about production models.

The street-legal versions of the engine sound like a perfect fit for future sports cars. Toyota is reportedly considering both EV and ICE versions of a reborn MR2 roadster, with a rumored GRMN performance flagship combining the 2.0-liter engine with the GR-Four 4WD system. The same combination could be used for the return of the Celica, potentially as a front-engined, two-door coupe.

While these rumors should be taken with a grain of salt, the publication suggests that the Toyota MR2 GRMN could be produced in limited numbers, exclusively for the Japanese market. Toyota might offer a choice between an 8-speed automatic and a 6-speed manual, similar to the options available in the GR Corolla and GR Yaris hot hatches. As for pricing, it’s estimated to be around ¥10 million ($70,000), though it’s too early to say for sure.

What has Toyota said?

In May 2024, Toyota confirmed the development of new 1.5-liter and 2.0-liter engines, as part of its collaboration with Subaru and Mazda for the future of internal combustion engines (ICE). While the automaker didn’t provide any specific details, it emphasized that the new engines will be highly efficient, powerful, hybrid-ready, and compatible with alternative fuels.

Toyota specifically stated that the new turbocharged 2.0-liter engine will surpass the current turbo 2.4-liter unit in power, while being smaller in size and more fuel-efficient. As anticipated, the 2.0-liter engine will meet stringent emission regulations across various global markets. Additionally, its compatibility with carbon-neutral fuels suggests it could remain viable even after potential bans on traditional gasoline and diesel powertrains.
